My parents give me some fun/food money for college. I'll probably just eat 2 meals a day (and budget them well) in order to pay for gas to the hill. Cuz I'll like actually have a car next year...

I'm not doing shit really. I have to drive the car i drive. It's either that or a truck and this thing is way better in the snow than any truck or jeep I've owned...awd or always stuck. If i lived where i didn't need to worry about it i suppose i'd be back on a bike or a civic. Rock and a hard place, I want and need to drive. Maybe i'll drive a bit slower, i'll try to eat at home or not out as much as possible, or continue to have chicks compensate my dinner and drinks. The way i see it it still costs me under 60 a fill, when i owned a truck and jeep 2-3 yrs ago i was paying more than that, more frequently as well to fill. I'm still flyin high on how cheap it is to fill the subie compared to the others, $20's spent that is, mental thing. Just go buy a big truck and fill it for a while, then when you go back it won't seem so bad!



oh and mrw, at least a pass in the poconos is super cheap if you get it in the summer when they first open up the buy. put away 10bucks a week starting now and you can get a pass or a family variant at any of the places...of course i'd suggest elk or camlbk. Is elk even considered poconos'? Best skiing in the area, imo.

I got a new job working for the Town that I live in last week. Before I was doing 180 miles to and from work each day looks I made a change at a good time. I had to get rid of my truck I was spending $35 per day in gas I'd hate to see that bill now.

also when our oil man in chief says we're going to curb our addiction to middle east oil it's nothing more than a hollow sound bite. we only get around 17% of our crude from the middle east. I realize that OPEC effectively sets the market, however we're enriching our neighbors more than any of the dictators in the middle east. unfortunately, canadians and mexicans as demagogues don't really play that well in Peoria. That is, unless they're taking jobs we don't want.

Interesting thought. I hadn't really considered some of the things I'd given up in the last few months as casualties of the spiraling price of gas, but, I guess they really were.

Just the other day I realized that I'd given up one of my favorite meals a few months ago because I could no longer justify the expense. In my prior life as a traveling salesman, my vehicle, gas, and related expenses were all paid for. One of the bennies was being able to drive pretty much wherever I wanted without thinking about it. I used to like to eat at this cool little japanese place once or twice per week. They made this awesome brown rice, teriyaki salmon, and veggie bowl that I was hooked on for years. Even after I became self-employed I had to keep getting it at least once a week.

However...after the price of gas doubled and I realized it cost me 4 or 5 bucks every time I round-tripped to that place, on top of the 8 for the lunch, I had to give it up. Same deal with just driving up the canyon for the fun of it. If I'm not skiing I don't just drive up any more. That really blows when you think about it.

What's your story?

First of all, we have several contributing factors. The Iran situation, increased world-wide consumption, and refining capacity.

Oil company profits (and shareholder profits) are up becasue the price is up.

That's just the way it works.

I have Exxon Mobil (XOM), ConocoPhillips (COP) and Archer Daniels Midland (ADM), among others, in my stock portfolio, and have owned them for many years. I own ADM for the ethanol exposure.

COP was trading at about 25/share three years ago. On Friday, it closed at 72.50/share. Think in terms of thousands of $$$ invested, and do the math.

The returns on these stocks have by far (and I mean BY FAR!) out-weighed any increases in gasoline prices at the pump. Plus the fact that I'm driving a relatively fuel efficent car means that my effective transportation costs are substantially lower than ever. It's a no-brainer.

What really kills me is when I see people commuting or running errands in big gas-guzzling SUV's. What a waste. Such stupidity drives up consumption, which in turn drives up prices. Simple matter of supply and demand.

BTW, here in Utah, I paid $2.58/gal for 91 octane (premium), yesterday.

Just sold my mountain bike, 2 pairs of skis and a pair of boots for gas money back to pittsburgh for the summer. After i burn off all that money though in my jeep; once i do get back to the burgh. I will more than likely go and buy another motorcycle and use that only, unless its downpouring. Also will probly sell my jeep and get something a bit more fuel conservative. Back to a car i guess.
