    K2 Axis AK vs Volkl 7 AX4

Looking for a fatter ski to add to quiver. I am looking for float off-piste, width under foot, and less work-out on the thighs.

Anyone been riding these and can offer some comparisons?

    _ Volkl 7 24 AX4 (formerly Vertigo G4's) 118 83 106
    _ K2 Axis AK (formerly AK Launcher) 118 90 108

    Off-piste pow and crud?
    On-piste groomers and bullet-proof?

Length? Longer the better? I am 195lbs fully loaded (w/ boots, helmet and backpack) and 6'1".

I have a Merlin 6 slalom race ski (182's, wood core and ti-sheet) and continue to adore them on the groomer's, bullet-proof, bumps, and in crud/tracked up. They are working me too hard in the pow.

    Volkl 7 24 AX4 in a 188

the axis ak just flat out sucks
    -unstable at high speeds
    -can't bust through anything
    -slow!!!!!!!

the 724 ax4 does it all
    -busts through crud
-fast (do not get in the back seat)
    -floats well in powder
    -durrable

my advice is to get an old g4 and save some money
but thats just what I would do

Wait, you're looking at G4's for LESS workout on your thighs?
I've concluded that DJSapp was never DJSapp, and Not DJSapp is also not DJSapp, so that means he's telling the truth now and he was lying before.

Have you skied the lawnchairs much??? I've never found them unstable at speed, or lacking in stability....ok the vertigos are probably slightly faster, but they are more work and are much less stable on technical steeps due to the increased sidecut....the K2's also float better...quite a bit.

For a one-ski quiver I'd take the Volkls (especially for European conditions). Given that you're already quite content with the performance on hardpack and mank of your existing K2's, I'd definitely plump for the additional hovercraftiness of the K2 AKs.

    Snow Ranger in Europe?

    Idris & bad_roo,

I like your reasoning about getting more under foot. I am looking for a second ski that floats. Really, really happy with my Merlin 6 ice skates on the pistes and hardpack, but they are too much work for me in the deep pow.

In a related post (started by Idris; "1 ski quiver") I read some praises for the Snow Ranger. I saw them in the States last year, but haven't seen any in the local shops (Geneve, PDS). Is this a model aimed at the US/Canada market? Different name in Europe?

Anyone skiied the Snow Ranger vs the Launchers? What u think?

    thanks, LITT

SnowRanger is an old model, which sold out here, If memory serves thy are similar lack of shape to the launchers, just a tad slimmer...if its real float try some Exploders...or go the whole hog and get Sanokes Sp?

Chime in, see if it helps at all.
The cat company that is next to us, uses the Lawnchairs, 03-04 and we upsize everyone, not because of the added float but because they are so soft that people flail in the deep stuff. It's a big board but as mentioned, like butter up front, nothing really there, not bad for blower but chunky, or sun-crust conditions it's plain spooky.
The older sploders are pretty bomber all-around, nice flex, good construction and the feel of a Volkl. Gadget has some for sale but I'm sure that doesn't help you much in that part of the world.
Seems like they turn up on e-bay fairly frequentl. Also might look for the old Nordica FF (red top-sheet) 125-100-115???
Skiing, where my mind is even if my body isn't.
