S-Chute followed by Bikini Contest tomorrow?

    Anyone down?

Repeat of what me, SheRa, and Blurred did last year...

Not very gnar ski, but consistent turns, and fun to look at your tracks while chilling on some brews at the bikini contest.

Gotta do some filming for my final film project unfortunately...

And CAIC is down right now, but im guessing the only worry will be wetslides, so earlier is better.

did anyone see the report this morning, or has it been down all day?

    4/14 Morning Report:

    WEATHER DISCUSSION

Warm temperatures today, about 5 degrees cooler than yesterday, will still be above average. Skies will be partly cloudy today, but thin clouds could help to heat things up as they form a greenhouse effect and reflect heat back to the snow surface. A closed low over the S. California coast is moving inland today and will bring rain initially, then snow to all mountains tonight with rain levels at about 9000 feet. Cooler air moves in tonight after midnight with cooler but not cold temps for Saturday.

    Northern Mountains

    Friday: Partly cloudy. Winds SW/10-20 G 30s. Highs 40-50.

Fri Night: Rain/snow after midnight, Winds S/10-20, Lows 25-35.

    Saturday: Snow T-2" Winds SW/15-25 > W/25-35. Highs 30-40.

    Central Mountains

    Friday: Partly cloudy. Winds SW/10-20 G 30s. Highs 40-50.

Fri Night: Rain below 9000'/snow after midnight 1-3", Winds S/10-20, Lows 25-35.

    Saturday: Snow 1-3" Winds W/20-30. Highs 30-40.

    Southern Mountains

Friday: Mostly cloudy, scattered aftn rain showers w/ T-storms. Winds SSW/10-20. Highs 40-50.

Fri Night: Rain below 8500'/snow 3-5", Winds S/10-25, Lows 25-35.

Saturday: Snow early then rain1-3" Winds WSW/20-30. Highs 30-40.

    SNOWPACK DISCUSSION

All Mountains: Wet slabs ran yesterday in the southern mountains with 2 to 3 foot crown lines. Some ran 700 vertical feet. Very warm valley temps are expected again today in the mountains. Yesterday, observers in the Northern Mountains found a nearly isothermal snowpack to elevations above 12,000 feet. That means most of the snow was near the melting point. They described the bottom of the snowpack as "slush," held together by the freeze at the very top of the snowpack. Once that upper snowpack melts and loses strength, we can expect a cycle of wet avalanches running to the ground. Some of our remote weather stations are down this morning, but Snotel sites show temperatures 1 to 2 degrees warmer at 5:00 am this morning than yesterday morning. There was little to no freeze in the southern and central mountains and a light freeze in the northern mountains.

With such warm overnight temperatures, the snow surface will soften and weaken rapidly. You want to be out of avalanche terrain before the surface layers lose all strength. Its time to move to a shadier, lower-angled slope when you are plowing through six to eight inches of surface slush, or you easily punch through the crust into the rotten snow below.

I was on Loveland Pass early yesterday morning and found some good corn by about 9:00 on east facing slopes. There is still some cold snow on north aspects above treeline. I noticed wet loose slides on west aspects below treeline late in the afternoon.

    BACKCOUNTRY AVALANCHE DANGER

All Mountains: This morning the backcountry avalanche danger will be LOW. By midday the danger will rise to CONSIDERABLE on all aspects near and below treeline, and south through west aspects above treeline. Large, wet-loose avalanches are possible late in the day.

NOAA upgraded the storm, calling for 1-3 tonight and 3-7 for tomorrow on top of Vail Pass all starting after midnight hypothetically.

I'll be up there somewhere. I would hang at the bikini contest later, for what it's worth, the talent was a bit lacking last year. A couple of real cuties and a bunch of jokers and guys and wannabees. I like the concerts better. Saw Blue Oyster Cult last year and they rocked the house.

Anyway. Here's to some powpow for Saturday.

Assuming it's Sunday, I'm in. If there's not too much new snow to manage, it could be a nice powder run down. At least we won't have to worry about it running wet. And the bikini contest is a silly, fun show.
