MSA: Packasport roof top boxes available cheap

I found a guy through craigslist who has roughly 20 Packasport roof top boxes for sale. He's located in Sacramento, California.

Info on boxes, the different models, and why they cost a bunch more than Yakima/ Thule:
    http://www.packasport.com/

I bought a model 60 from him, new in box, $325. He says he's got the 60 in black or white, and the 90 and 115 in white. He also mentioned that he thinks he has some of the 115 in silver, but wasn't too sure. Retail pricing on the model 60 is $699, plus either tax and/or shipping, so this is a good price.

Story behind this: he used to work for Packasport before Yakima took over. Apparently Yakima was rolling out this high-end line of boxes in the fall of 2001, but between 9/11 and Thule's new shiny line of silver boxes, sales orders didn't meet expectations. So Packasport went back on its own. Somewhere in these transitions he bought a lot of old stock from Packasport, and has been selling them slowly ever since. These old stock boxes are from when they were manufactured by A.R.E., a truck shell manufacturer. I don't know who makes them now.

Anyway, he's got a lot of brand new Packasport boxes, in the cardboard shipping crates. Cheapest way to get them is to contact him and pick up in Sacramento. I don't know if he's willing to ship, but he said he has sold (and shipped) some boxes through ebay, so that remains a possibility -- but -- shipping costs are going to be $$$ given the size and weight involved.

PM me for the contact information. I'd rather not post it where he'll get spam spiders picking up his email and phone #.

Caveat: I very much doubt that Packasport will extend any warranty on these boxes. OTOH, they're brand new, and less than half price. Well worth the warranty risk in my mind.

Mine's been up on the roof since I got it. I've seen some old Packasport boxes where the finish has gone to shit (grey, peeling), so I waxed the top parts of my box; hopefully it'll stay nice and shiny for awhile. So far, so good.

Weirdly enough, gas mileage on my Grand Cherokee went up about 1 mpg since putting the box up there. Must be smoother aerodynamically.

    ORLY?

Thanks for the beta - I'll do the same. Let me guess - Black boxes faded? Maybe Heat/UV from Summer use? Wax is a great idea.

JFost - no reply yet... standby.

I think it's part of the gel coat thing. There must be some sort of "paint" type finish on top of the fiberglass to smooth it all out and make it shiny. I figure since you can wax a truck topper to help protect it against UV breakdown, why not the roof box too?

Just talked to Trent... and the news is GOOD!

    Still available:

System 60, Black or White, $300 + Freight or local Pick Up in Scramento (prefered)

    System 90, White only, $400 + Freight.

Also - he has one used White System 60 (his personal box, got a new Black Truck so he switched to a black box)... very lightly used, a couple minor scratches etc $200 - Local Pick Up only (the used on is not in the original shipping box so it would be a major PIA for him to ship but feel free to try to talk him into it )

FRIEGHT: I live in Detroit; my freight was $125ish to my buisness address. Plan on about $50 more if you HAVE to ship to a residential address. Trent will give you a Zip Code specific freight quote...

He did not say how many of each he has left but he did say that his plans to seel all remining stock as a lot to a retailer is on hold for now so I am guessing he has several of each at this time.

Testimonial rant: I got a new System 60. It arrived undamaged in the original shipping box - no worries. As previously noted these are solid fiberglass construction - very well built. FWIW, Trent also recommended waxing the box with a marine fiberglass/gelcoat type wax to keep it looking steezy for years to come. Form fitting "wall to wall" carpeting inside - these are top shelf all the way.

PM for Contact info and from there its up to you.

Thanks one last time to ElChup for the Grade A hook up!

    Gel Coats

Gel coats fail because some folks don't use enough of a UV stabilizer. Living in Colorado, my kayaks (some very expensive and 1 of a kind) will get destroyed by the sun, so applying a UV inhibitor will go a long way -- specifically "303". As the color fades, this stuff actually penetrates and preserves. This is a great buy on a very good roof box so I'd protect it the best I could.

so, what you're saying is that because of the lack of UV stabilizer in the initial application of gel coat, that kayaks will fail in Colorado? Does this apply to other states where the sun is out in the summer time? Will this stuff (specifically "303") make a deal on roof boxes from a LOOOOOOONG time ago reappear?

    303

    Sorry about the double post.

I have 15 years of using this stuff on: polyethylene, fiberglass, rubber, latex, etc. and it is surprising. The only problem is it's slippery. Let it penetrate and wipe off the excess after a few hours.

If the roof box is now really gray and was once black, then it won't bring that back. Go get a free sample from their website:http://www.303products.com/

It wouldn't hurt. It keeps it from getting brittle as well.
