The Price of Beer in Canada.

What's up with the price of beer in Canada?

It's been quite awhile since I've been North of the border for more than a day trip so my preconceived notions of Canada being the land of beer where Kokanee, Labatt, or Molson flowed in the public fountains have taken a serious beating.

If my Canadian brothers are all forced to pay the exorbitant prices for "cheap" beer I saw while up there, I truly feel for you guys. Cases in point - half rack of Coors Light for $23 in Vancouver, $41 for a case of Kokanee in Whistler (where I understand things are more expensive, but sheesh!) and $13 for a 6-pack of micro-brew. Hard alcohol didn't seem to be that far out of line with prices down here. $7-$8 for a pint in a pub as compared to $5-$6 for a mixed drink??? So is it like this all over Canada or is it just in BC? Is the government trying to force Canadians to give up beer in favor of the hard stuff?

Don't get me wrong, not bashing Canada in any way. Had a great time, the scenery was stunning, I skied every day on some fun terrain, and the people were all very friendly. Just bewildered by what seemed like truly exorbitant beer prices in a country where I thought beer would be plentiful and cheap.

On a side note, coming back into the US was a real experience. Turns out there's another guy with the same first and last name and birth date who's considered armed and dangerous. You haven't lived 'til you've been "taken down" at the border by a bunch of very tense border agents. Must've been a good show for the people in line behind me.

The sign down the street at the local dep says 21$ for a 2-4 of Ex or Blue which ain't so bad. Prices can be quite different depending on the province you are in.

British Columbia has regulated beer stores don't they? Maybe thats why although the prices aren't that much better here. The cheapest beer usually costs of a minimum of $1 a beer

That's why I always buy as much Kokanee as my truck can hold in Montana and then sell it on the black market in Nelson.

Americans pay double because we're pissed about the softwood lumber tariffs. Free trade my ass.

Booze is sold by government liquor stores and is the same price everywhere (even Whistler). For $41 I get a 2-4 of Kokanee.

And you're surprised you got accosted with that name?... They had me detained once because I tried to cross the boarder with a can of "Grizzly be-Gone"... pepper spray (aka: "Human Seasoning").

Perscription drugs are much cheaper, though.... you'll appreciate that more when you're older.

    7 - 8 for a pint?

Always ask what's on special. Most every bar/pub has a different beer on special each day. Price is usually around 3.50 or 4.50.

For giving up this wonderful little tid bit of info you all owe me a beer.

After buying a case in Whistler, I realized why the kids love the weed, you can't afford to drink there.

Drink specials are verbotten in BC because it encourages drinking. Now you owe me a beer.

Normally a pint is $5.50-$6 unless there's strippers involved.

I thought that you could have specials but they had to be on for the entire day. In Alberta we have huge happy hour deals ( you can still get 50 cent drafts if you look around) and a special. At regular price the average pint is $4.50 and a 12 at the store is $11 and up. (microbrews and imports run at about $10 for 6)
Move along nothing to see here.

BC is the worst example and whistler being the worst of that. Mind you I think the gov't store in whistler is the same as Vancouver. The private (cold beer) joints are even pricier. Alberta is much better especially for premium liquors or wine. Ontario has some good discount stuff and pricing adjusted due to competition (what's that?). Not sure how quebec is these days.

In general in Canada there is a lot of tax applied to the booze by federal and provincial gov'ts. I find Oregon booze is a bit pricey too, Montana....... woo hooo cheap like borscht!

The weed is super primo compared to the beer aka ONE BIG VAT OF BEER. That's why the kids love the BC BUD. Still it's better than most American beer IMO, but then again your weed's probably better than your over-hyped beer too. Moral of the story: smoke weed, boycott Molson's and Labatt's.

Next time you are in Vancouver you come on down to Kits and I'll let you buy me the beer special of the day and it won't cost you more than 3.99 per beer. Some days it's a bottle other days it's a pint. Fridays are 3.99 pints of Russell Cream Ale, good stuff I say.
