In tahoe what will be good tommorow?

So Im here on a bussines trip and am in S.Tahoe and plan to ski Sat/Sun

I can drive wherever, so what will be good, I saw the noaa forecast, but being from Seattle it means shit to me.

In Seattle, I can tell you which resort will usually get the best snow, not here... So any sugestions? I was thinking on Kirkwood or alpine tomorow, (unless chains are required).

Also without question it would be cool to ski with some of you.. I'll but some beer..

    Later

Well anyway if you see a tall guy with green jacket seth vcous helmet and blue goggles its me.

You have internet access (obviously) -- check the ski reports in the morning -- here's why:

Warm spring storms can mean rain at all the lower elevation resorts (ones with a base around 6200-6800'), which would mean go to Rose or Kirkwood (base around 8200').

But windy storms cause crust and mank at Rose, and Kirkwood suffers from road closures more than any other Tahoe resort.

So all you can really do is check the reports in the morning and go from there.

Can't go wrong with either of those.

    yea that was my thought,

is there any telemetry data (i.e powderstash.com) in the taho regions or do you just go to the ski resort web sites?

    Thanks

if I was down there and the road closures aren't an issue I would just go to kirkwood. I think their terrain is similar and possibly better than alpine as well as less crowded. You can generally trust what the resorts snow report says for accumulation, however some of them tend to embelish a little bit. From what I've seen it's not supposed to be a huge storm and I think you'll probably have fun at either of the resorts you have listed.

I would go to Kirkwood - best snow in tahoe. You can probably count on chains since it will snow tonight...

I have a Kirkwood season pass but will be buying a ticket at Alpine tomorrow because it's closer to where I have to be afterwards... = more skiing time.

Definitely your best two options. Rose also good. But check the websites or phones in the AM.

    As of 10:00...

    Squaw high camp reporting 3"
Alpine BASE is 30 deg and 2"
Rose is 22 deg, 97% hum & HIGH winds

looks like elevation won't be much of a factor...everywhere should be good

Currently, chain restrictions on Hwy 88 West Slope (open). No chain restrictions on 88 from Tahoe. Nothing on 50, and chains on I-80 (www.dot.ca.gov). Means snow at Kirkwood, mank at Sierra/Homewood, and snow at sugarbowl, Squaw, upper Alpine. You mention Alpine and Kirkwood. KW is higher. You are in SLT, the answer is obvious; Kirkwood. Keep in mind 89 is closed north to south, and its a long way around.

here is a link for some data that is usually pretty accurate for Squaw. Alpine is a mile away and around the same altitude, so you can use it.

Rose today was marginal. 2" of fresh on top of some really firm melt/freeze crud. Even the groomed made my teeth chatter. The best we found was the high chutes like Saddle and Fuse. It was nice and soft, though got bumped out after a while. Toward the bottom it was firm again with crunchballs turning to slush on the runout. Waa wahhhhhh (tuba sound)

Chain controls were done by 8:00 - 8:30. I ended up at Sierra. About 4 - 8 inches of fresh over edgable rain crust. In the out of bounds, it was deeper, but lower layers were very wet. The best strategy was relatively fast and in the fall line. Made for a nice morning until things tracked out, then it was normal skier packed. Nice day for April, clouds early, light wind, lots of sun. Temps went from 28 at the base in the AM to mid-40s in the afternoon.

well, I ended up at alpine, it was fun..

well aside from me taking a nice tip hook to head splat fall on some groomerish run..

    he,

other than that everything was fun, so, does alpine seem flat this year ( I skied alpine twice before last year and the year before), seemed steeper.

anyway at the end found some really nice snow by the hour glass (I think) area (the place you sidestep to for a little while from the summit chair, lookers left) anyway way form the main runs was fun I took it kinda easy but looking forward to hitting something tomorrow, anyway I was they guy in the green jacket if anybody saw me

    later,

ps what is up with the hyw closures?

Yah alpine is definitely mellowed a bit with all the snow. Idiot's is like a regular run. Everything is pretty filled in. More so than I've seen in the 6 years I've been here.

Glad you had a good time.

skiied at Sugarbowl... found some great lines of pow that i attempted to shred as well as i could. legs were definitely fried towards the end of the day. but with 6" of fresh pow, it was a pretty fun day.

btw.... saw someone w/ 179 Bros and Dynafits... getting on the Disney lift. i was going to ask change for a nickel, but was busy swapping skis...

Thie twins and I skiied only 10-noon. We didn't get to the house until 11:45 last night, and there was a lot of falling, plus they're not crazy about wind. We're up for the week, so I didn't feel the need to maximize slope time today.

Out again tomorrow. I think I've got the only pair of Bros at Alpine, definitely the only pair travelling with a pair of five-year-olds, so say hi.

FWIW, the five year olds are talking about wanting to do Promised Land or High T. This has been a good season.

I'm almost positive I've seen several pairs of Bros there, and it's just recently that I started paying attention to what skis people have. Nice looking skis though.
