Funny like an avalanche. But what about the van? Any updates?
Nine people in a van involved.
St. Louis family of 7, with 2 hitchhikers in the car with 'em. Large SUV pushed off/nearly off the road in the Seven Sisters area. No serious injuries!
-according to KSL 5 news update.
2 hitchers were from Alf's Restuarant

That's some lucky shit. The UDOT guys won't forget this for a while. Sheer dumb luck no one is dead.

Backcountry travel is backcountry travel, whether you're center punching the S. face of Superior or driving up LCC. The UDOT guys are always working, always watching, listening, driving, skiing, and stressing. They are under such pressure from the businesses and the public involved in the canyon, which is probably what contributed to them deciding to open the road for that short window yesterday, more than their belief that the road was safe.
UDOT doesn't get enough credit for keeping us safe. Both of those canyons are monsters!
Yeah, this incident will keep the UDOT folks conservative for a long time.
Ohhhh, man I wish I could go back in time. I'd take state.
Y'all do realize this isn't like a totally uncommon occurence? This stuff seems to happen at least once a year. I'm sure UDOT is quite used to it by now, shit happens.

very well worded Alto!!
what I would've typed as a UDOT employee and friend of all the different entities that had a say in yesterday's decision to open the road for a "small" window, is exactly as you did ... again, very well said Yound Jedi II![]()

as you said, this does happen at least once a year, but as you don't realize or maybe have forgotten - a life is a life - no matter if it is a mormon politician from Utah or a family from St. Louie - Liam, Paul, George, etc. DO NOT take this lightly at all - they lose sleep over these kind of decisions - some years more than others.
And, as far as UDOT being "used to it by now", not even fuggin' close!!! Despite the legal and political ramifications of it all (that I know for sure said crew doesn't give a shit about), a life or lives could've been lost and are at stake in multiple locations up/down lcc in situations like yesterday/last night/this morning ... and that I guaran-fucking-T you is all said crew gives a shit about.

UDOT does a damn fine job with tough circumstances. there aren't many canyons like ours with that many active paths to control. they bombed the hell out of those shots not too long before they opened the road. there was a lot of chatter back and forth between liam and snow safety all day. the 8" of snow in 2 hrs kinda hurt the chances of getting everyone down before the paths got loaded again but once they realized things were getting bad they handled it as best they could. it's not an easy job but i suppose they could keep accidents to a minimum if they closed the roads every time it snowed and sent someone up to check all the paths. hey trackhead, how long is that half of the horseshoe traverse?![]()
Hey, not trying to shit on UDOT, they do an excellent job, and I have a lot of respect for the responsibility they have to deal with. However, when cars are getting flung off the road by natural avalanches, obviously it was a mistake to have the road open. To equate driving in LCC to backcountry travel is a huge stretch. They were most definitely under pressure to let people "get home", but taking one look out the GMD window into that raging blizzard made me wonder about their decision to open the road, even before the accident happened. With multiple inches of snow an hour and massive wind transport, how long can they assume a round of shelling will keep things safe? Not very long apparently.
