PNW Beta Request + Possible Utarded Hookup

    2 combined things here:

    1) I own a home in Sugarhouse, Salt Lake City.

    2) I may have the chance to take a fire season job on the Olympic Nat. Forest which would be around Port Angeles.

    PNW part:
I'm looking to see if anyone has anything to contribute with regard to getting me started on figuring if there would be a way to live on the way, way, way cheap in the Port Angeles area or nearby or if cheap doesn't happen there. I'm starting from scratch here so anything y'all know would be of assistance.
Also if anyone has any professional opinions of the Olympic Nat. Forest, particularly it's fire organization, that would be spectacular! Thanks in advance.

    Utard part:
I'd also like to see if somebody responsible would be interested in living in, and taking care of my home. If this happens I'm going to be taking very little stuff so virtually all my stuff will be at the house. My primary concerns are keeping the place secure, occupied, and mitigating some of the mortgage/utilities while I'm away.

Mountains, lakes, beaches, rocky coast, rednecks, retirees, native Americans, rain shadow, rain forest, hot springs, boating, hiking and etc. A good place to spend a summer. Deer Park campground close to 6000ft on Blue Mountain is one of my favorite places out there (NE corner of Olympics). Cape Flattery where the Pacific Ocean and Strait of Juan de Fuca meet is another one.

As far as cheap living goes, I don't know about that. There is a lot of growth between PA, Sequim and Port Townsend. The rain shadow means less rain, more development. Lots of retirees in the Sequim area. My guess is the farther west you go the cheaper it'll get.

Port Townsend is where you'll find the most "culture". Fort Warden is the home of Centrum which hosts music festivals, from fiddle music, jazz, blues, songwriters etc. www.centrum.org

What would be really super cool is if somebody in the area wanted to trade houses for the summer.

fat chance of that I'm sure.

I worked with a guy one year who spent several seasons in Olympic. He said it was super low key, and they managed to get dispatches on a fairly regular basis. This was a while back, and as you know the substitution of 1-2 individuals in a small program can dramatically alter the way things work/feel. However, as a casual observer I would say that the NPS programs seem to be more organized than the USFS, BLM, AFS. This may be a function of policy, or simly that they are smaller and easier to manage. Have fun and enjoy the job.

    thanks.

that's a good confirmation of what I thought.

as for the insertion of the 1-2 people into a program...3 of us long time friends from my old Taos crew are trying to get in at once. 1 is my old sup. who called me with this today so, hopefully this comes together like that.

a lot of this decision will rest on whether or not I can afford to not work much OT and pay for my house in utah and live there all at once. Not to mention whether or not I'm offered a job.

    bump plus update: bumpdate?

    anyway
seems like my roommate would probably want to stay at the house so if someone wanted to share a house with him it would be like 350 plus utilities, which should be half of 60-100 depending mostly on water usage.

and Port Angeles was wrong, more like Quilcene or Hoodsport.

No Government housing up that way?

On the downside the Oly isn't going have much (any) fire activity all summer long. On the upside, they are probably going to get you on as many dispatches as possible.

Don't expect 1000 hours of overtime.

The best thing about Hoodsport is that it's only 5 miles from Lilliwaup.

at this stage I'm more concerned with the financial and physical security of my house in Salt lake than the housing on the PNW end. I think there's probaby govt housing...I still don't know for sure if I have the job but I'm trying to have as much of the "leaving SLC" end of things covered as possible so I can confidently accept if they do offer. It sounds like the new olf fmo is cool with off-unit assignments, so maybe we'd be able to roam a bit more than your average agency engine..hard to know in advance though.

I have contacts with ONP and know quite a bit about PA, but not so much about ONF. I see the ONF engines about a bit, but usually only once fire season is really rolling. I've had them on division before, but didn't really get to know any of the crews at all.

Sequim would be better than Hoodsport or Quilcene for local fires, they generally get some activity there. I don't think ONF has a crew or engine in PA, the ONP operates there as the Park buts up to the town. The peninsula is a kicking place to summer though.

    Grrrrrr

the new OLF fmo would probably like to talk...based on my conversation with him he's wanting to make some contacts with fire people in the park. For what it's worth and by all accounts so far he's regarded as a real pro. I've had good conversations with him. You should stop by sometime, I bet he'd be stoked to make some parky contacts.
