UVM, Utah, or MSU: Where would you go, if any of these?

I'm currently a frosh at Virginia Tech and I really don't know why I ever thought it would be a good idea to go to college down south (I'm from VT, like 10 minutes from UVM). So I'm transferring for next fall and these are the three schools that I applied to. I want to ski a lot, I was thinking around 3 days a week would be fine, but also want to get an education. I'm an Accounting major but I could be changing that (to what I have no clue right now). I'm also thinking of taking a year off and skiing, but I don't see how that will give me any better idea of what I want to do with life. I know pretty much everything there is to know about UVM, but what about the other places? Dorms, food, girls, etc...I know the skiing kicks at both Utah and MSU. So basially any help in this regard, and where would you choose yourself. I checked the other college threads and I think this is different enough to merit it's own thread.

I've never been to utah, so I'm not sure how close the mountains are with driving through SLC.
Bridger is only 25 minutes away... 35 on a powder day. That makes it real nice for getting up there before or after classes. Bigsky/moonlight are great if you have free days.

If you are from the burlington area, don't go to UVM. Broaden your horizons.
The skiing is super good and super close in Utah. 20 minutes to an hour depending on which of 9 resorts you want to go to. 20-40 minutes to great BC. Not sure what the social life is like there though.

Have you considered Missoula? I've known several people who have lived there, usually for school, and all seem to have enjoyed it. The skiing's inferior to bozeman, but it's still there, and there might be some single coeds.

Also, have you considered Boulder or Fort Collins (I know, long drive to ski from either).

I would go to Utah. I am currently "studying" at CU in Boulder and considering transfering. The skiing in Utah is, in my opinion, the best and I have heard the school is good too. The campus is very close to both canyons and the culture there is not as bad as you may have heard. I just got back from five days at Snowbird, Alta, and Solitude and it was fucking epic. If not there think about Reno or even CU. I would go to Utah though.

If its any consolidation I'm 4th year now at UBC in Vancouver, ski whistler all the time am getting an accounting major and still havent really figured anythign out in life yet.

get your education and have fun or go have fun now. in the long term who cares whether or not you start working at age 22 or 24

I think he was referring to Montana State , not Michigan State.

I agree with skiski, don't go to UVM if you live 10min from Burlington. I go here and I absoultely love it, but you should go some where that isn't so close to home to meet new people and experience different things. My buddy went to MSU and loved it and I have a friend at CU who loves it there. If you can visit any of these places I'd def suggest it, but if not check out what kind of programs they have and if you do end up switching your major is that even a possibility without adding on extra years or transferring.

Since there are pretty cool, I'd go to the one that's the best in what you want to study (if you have something in mind).

edit: ...or rather the one that you will learn the most at (ie, MIT may be the best for engineering, but it isn't for everyone).

Well, they're are quite different so it depends on what your looking for- small or big. Bozeman is more of a picturesque mountain town, SLC is smoggy and populated. You'll recognize faces and probably meet people quicker at MSU since it's a smaller community. Utah has more snow and more terrain, but with decent coverage at the Bozeman areas, the terrain kills. If it's only about skiing go with Utah, if your looking for more of a sense of community like Burlington would have, go to Montana.

Don't consider Missoula, you'll get bored with the skiing pretty quick.

If I could re-do one decision it would be to go to Bozeman for undergrad . . . take the chance to live someplace rad that is harder to accomodate with a "real" job. Other options I'd consider would be UW, UC Boulder, or Western.

I acutally did apply to CU and got in, but I figured I wouldn't mention it because with my mention of girls I'm sure everyone would say CU. It's too expensive for my family, and taking a year off and getting in-state isn't something my parents support, which is odd. The thing that's pushing me towards Utah over MSU and UVM is that there are so many programs there that I'll probably eventually find what I want to do, and yes, I do expect it to take longer then 4 years if I switch majors (accounting is basically a 5 year major anyways, so I'm not worried).

Anyone know anything about the Utah dorms? Am I gonna meet a lot of kids that are there to go to school and ski (a la MSU) or will it be a lot of kids from around SLC that just didn't want to live at home?

I choose MSU and do not regret it. Skiing is close and easy to hitch hike to. I skied overt 100 times last year without a car. Hitch hiking is easy in Bozeman, but it has also been easy when i have been in SLC. Both have a lot to offer as far as rockclimbing, biking, skiing and anything outdoors. The Male to Female ratio is not great, but improving at MSU. Avoid Missoula if you are looking to ski, Western Washington does not allow for much mid week skiing with baker 1.5hrs away and whistler 2hrs, UW is an hour away from Alpental and night skiing but UW is expansive out of state and it is a large city. Washington maybe good if you are looking for more weekend skiing and big city feel. There are many people from VT and NH in Bozeman, which may make you feel more welcome. Instate tuition in Bozeman sets you back to 18 credits over the course of a year, instead of the 30 standard. PM for more detail. The small town feel of bozeman has won me over from seattle, where i grew up. Anyway I would say...

When I was chossing schools I went through this and found MSU, my current location, is the shit. But the next best was either Utah, Reno, or Idaho Falls. Bozeman is closest to best areas and not near as backasswards as SLC or Idaho Falls, I am from Denver. Reno is coll if you want that life, but Bozeman is the best, and again not in Utah!

I liked my undergrad, but if I could have gone anywhere else, bozeman is the place. I think Bozeman offers the best all around outdoor opportunities.

So apparently MSU is the favorite so far. What's the drug situation like in the dorms? I'm actually trying to get away from that (it's crazy at UVM, and Vermont for that matter). Alcohol isn't the issue, pot is. I've smoked my fair share but don't want to get back into that during college.

Can't comment on the dorm scene since I wasn't there for undergrad, but I'm sure others can. From what I remember in my undergrad, dorms are kind of what you make them. If your that susceptible to smoking weed when you don't want to, maybe you shouldn't live in a dorm.

Well I went to the U lived in the dorms and have an accounting degree. The dorms generally have a ton of skiers in them because that is where most out of state students live. I didn't meet very many people that were from here in the dorms most are out of staters. The accounting program is good - if you attend I'd be happy to reccomend professors you'll want.

one thing i really like about bozeman compared with other ski towns is that it is a really diverse town (not in the case of skin color or sexual preference but for why people live here). People are here for all sorts of reasons, skiing, fishing, general outdoors, the school, jobs, whatever. I work in a company of 50 ppl and maybe 3 of us are skiers.
