    What's wrong with my knee?

I run about 15 - 20 miles a week over moor land, trails and a little bit of road. I row 10k's a week and use one of those big exercise balls for core work etc.

Had to visit some sites last week for work and covered 1,500 dull motorway miles in three days and my right leg was pretty stiff as the seat wouldn't go back far and my leg was at 45 degrees for ages on end.

Went for a run yesterday, about two miles out my right knee went from twinging a bit to full on inability to take any weight at all. I slowed the pace and more or less jogged home feeling utterly hacked off.

Knee gave way again going down stairs this morning.

Pain is specifically placed, side of right knee - but feels like it's just inside the knee. (If that makes sense.) No problems walking up stairs, just down.

I'm really hoping someone here can confidently say what I've done, and what the cure is. If not, I'll follow the frustrating route that is the NHS.

I can confidently say that you've fucked your knee. The cure is to get one of these......

and people over here are so in love with socialized medicine...

not that this helps much, but if you end up needing it, try to get it scoped as soon as possible. i tore (a bunch of small tears over time) a lateral meniscus, and that surgery was the most liberating thing i've had.

do you notice any swelling? or does the knee just stop working without warning?

Sounds like your ITB might be getting a bit gammy. The decending stairs-pain is a giveaway. Is the pain on the outside of the knee? If yes, how tight are your legs? Long distance driving will do that to ya, don't you know.

Look up "iliotibial band syndrom" as well as "ITB stretches" on that world-wide web thingy for further information.

    Best o' luck!

Sounds like a tear of the posterior horn of the medial meniscus. Go to the doc.!

Thank you for your help. I reckon Viva may be on the money after looking up the iliotibial band thing. The same website then covered the other suggestions - lack of swelling, thigh pain as well...all fits best in one catagory. Also, it refered to rubbing of fibres over the bone if the knee is flexed at an angle - which would make sense after the rubbish car I was in. Of course, I may well be being a coward and trying to find the easiest get out that will allow me to get outside again quickly. I am having a it checked out this weekend, so hopefully more will become clear then.

Squatch - to answer your question; no swelling, the localised area is a bit warm but not red hot. Outside of right knee - but feels about a cm below the surface if that makes sense. Goes without warning - but a stab of pain - when flexing with downward weight bearing pressure. (Up hills and stairs is fine.)

Heyduke have been drinking by yourself again?

    Thanks again.

    sounds like itb to me

I had a long bout with it. I could start a run but about 10 minutes in it would start to lock up. Takes a while to get over it, but I'm clear for now. Stretch and lay off running for awhile should take care of it if it is itb.

Can this type of pain come also from jumping on a bicycle and riding 20 flat Florida miles?
I hope that's why my knee hurts...

ITband or patello-femoral pain would be the two most likely situations.

Ice, hamstring, quad and ITB stretching wuld be the things to try first. If it doesn't go away then think about go to your doc.

Was thinking about it last night and remebered that I rode horses that day (last Thursday) and the damned saddle slipped while I was dismounting, and I must have tweaked it then. And then irritated it with the long bike ride.

Yeah, I'm fighting IBS trying to get my achilles and ACl legs to play well together. It's a PITA but is manageable. Foam rolls, stretching, ice, advil and massage all help. It's freaky post ACL as it makes you wonder what else might be going on in there.
