    Powder Magazine Blues

(Sung to the tune of "Stormy Monday")

I subscribed to Powder, but Skiing came instead
Oh I subscribed to Powder, but Skiing came instead
Skiing mag is bad, and missing Powder’s oh so sad

Yes my Powder flies somewhere, and I don’t know where it goes
Skiing comes right to me, and I don’t know why it flows
Someday maybe I’ll find out, but in the meantime it blows

Subscription Department have mercy, SD have mercy on me
SD have mercy, my heart’s in misery
Crazy about my Powder, yes, send it back to me
I can't understand why people are frightened of new ideas. I'm frightened of the old ones.

Oh so familiar. After years of dealing with the subs department, the Palm Coast fulfilment agents and so on I have given up on trying to get hold of my copies of Powder. Occasionally I get a copy; the last two that arrived came addressed to my address but in the Channel Islands - not even the country I live in but they were able to redirect them to the right country.

Sorry, KD, I know it pisses you off to hear this but the people who deal with your subs are full of it. I don't know how many times I have called them, emailed them or corrected my address online - I still don't get the mags delivered as I should. Several times I've changed my address online to the "right" country only to get a confirmation saying I live in the Channel Islands again. I've called the fulfillment people about it (and when I have they have been very helpful and have sent me the copies I've missed) but I shouldn't have to do this to get every copy. And I read your post a few months ago - saying that the sub house say that often it is the subscriber's fault they don't get the mag - and whilst it may be true in some cases, it really annoyed me that they take that line with you; I've gone the right way about trying to get my issues and still never seem to get them.

It must be incredibly frustrating to put huge effort into the magazine only to have people complain because they don't get it sent to them. I know it's not your fault (and I've held of the usual bi-monthly rant about it this winter because of it) but if Powder's agents can't send the magazine to the right country... FWIW I really enjoyed the two issues I had sent and the others I was able to buy when I was in the US.

Mulletizer: Europe's a little tricky. I don't know why and I'm not sure what I can do with that, but send me an e-mail with your name and address and I'll pass it to someone in house here who has a way of fixing these things.

Monique, you shouldn't be having any issues in Washington. The problem may be that we havne't had a new issue come out since late January. So if you subscribed recently, you won't see anything until sept. If you haven't already, e-mail this address: powder@palmcoastd.com. Feel free to cc me. If you've done that already, drop me a line at derek.taylor@primedia.com and I'll get it fixed. Make sure you include an address.

Also, include your song. I'd like to run it in letters.

She shouldn't be having problems in Washington, but I sure as shit shouldn't be having problems in St. Petersburg. I am only 2.5 hours max from the distribution point. They are very helpful when you call, but it still remains fucked. I should say, I have gotten all my mags, just never on time. Some come 2 at a time, some come a month late with that month's edition following the next day. Main problem is, I usually read most of it here before I see it in the actual magazine.

Has there been a new issue since the Feb 2006 one? I haven't gotten one in forever, and I looked at Borders the other day and they still had that on the newsstand.

Yea wtf is up with that? Tons of skiing left in one of the better years in a lot of places and they tap out, essentially, in January. I think they should quit sending mags in August or September when it is still 90 degrees and work through April.

Great mag though, a classic. Like that Hart poster from the late 70's early 80's with the four blondes. Totally Awesome!

That was the last one, which is a whole other sore point altogether. All our readers want magazines in the winter/spring, but there's not advertising money that time of year.

The good news is, if you read The Car column backwards, it gives instructions on how to make a pretty sweet bong out of your avalanche shovel.

Does anything strike you wrong that a skiing magazine's last issue for the season is in january?

it is nice to get issues in august, light at the end of the tunnel and whatnot, but it amazes me how quickly the publishing season comes to an end, while the ski season continues to go strong.

Does anybody remember that old Hart Skis poster with the 4 blondes? Feathered hair and Gerry ski jackets I believe, maybe, not sure.

Thanks, KD (and sorry to open a can o' complaints!). I'd renewed back in Sept but procrastinated on following up when December et al didn't arrive. When my songwriting career takes off I'll just send my people down to the newstand to get the latest issue. In the meantime, thanks for your help.

Can o' complaints? Ok grandpa Simpson. I just want a magazine in the time of year when there is the most snow!

A valid desire, indeed. As I expained above, it's an advertizing issue. Ski companies don't have budget to run ads after Christmas, when they feel most skis sell, and we don't have a big enough circ to make up for it with car and booze ads.

    Yeah.

    but....

Skiing isnt popular like surfing and snowboarding hence no $$$$ to support it like KD mentioned.

but if Powder wanted to include snowboarding....then it would come all year long....

Powder did that decades ago, and it worked so well, they started a whole new magazine. They called it Snowboarder.

The real battle is convincing companies that skiing is a year-round culture (like surfing and snowboarding) and not just a winter pasttime. This board goes a long way to show that. With companies like quiksilver buying in, it's getting better. Interestingly, Skiing as a participation sport is a lot more popular than surfing. But there aren't a lot of malls in Oklahoma carrying K2 t-shirts. Every single one carries Roxy, though.
