i'm heading to maui on the 14th! i'm looking for maggot advise on potential hook-ups/what to bring. i've got a kiteboarding lesson planned. i've been trying to learn out here, but it sucks learning alone. plus, i'm very scared of my kite i just bought.
anyway, back in 2002 i bought a used surfboad in San Diego. i bought a gun (7'1") to help me with paddling speed and still get the feel for a shortboard. i've had it up on the boat a few times, and been surfing on it for like a total of 12 days. so, here is my question. i'm staying in Wailea. do i bring my beat up gun and risk localism and general bad vibes, or do i rent and get some slack from other surfers because i'm a vacationing kook? are there good enough breaks around where i am staying that it would warrent bringing my own board becuase there are good breaks there. or, are they the long rolling bay type breaks that a longboard would be much better suited for anyway?

any help for this surfing jong would be appreciated.

Maybe $100 from mainland to Town, an' anoda $80 fo da Town-Maui flight. Betta you just buy board ova hea.

Stick to da beginna breaks, don't try snake locals on da good sets an you be fine....oddawise if you drop in on braddah yo face gonna be all brok!

There are plenty of awesome shortboard breaks provided you get the swell for it. March is mostly north shore for bigger swells. Hookipa/Pavillions can be a bit localistic, but if you can surf and show respect, you can get in the lineup (I'm not good enough for there, but know folks that have surfed there no problem).
But that break also stretches for miles all the way to Kanaha where you will be kiting. there is plenty of open terrain.
On the South shore, there are more popular surf breaks from Wailea to Lahiana, Kaanapali and beyond, provided you get south swell.

I would wait to check the forecast right before you leave to decide on the gun. If the wave forecast sucks, then rent a longboard. If a good swell is firing, then bring your favorite stick.

Edit: missed the part about you surfing 12 days. Nevermind the gnarly breaks. Nevermind the gun. Rent a longboard and surf Laniipoco or thousand peaks on the road to Lahaina. Or go to the cove just north of Wailea. In fact there is a guy that rents boards there by the hour.
You will spend $100 to $150 flying your board out there and rental will prolly be $20 per day. do the math.

ok, i've surfed more days than 12. i've successfully surfed many diego breaks, steamers lane in Cruz, windansea, etc. i think i might be able to hold my own in an intermediate break with less than ideal conditions. yea, figured on the board charges though. i had no idea they would charge you from the big island to maui though. i might have to rethink this....

Dude!!! Bring your 7'1". You don't want to rent unless you want to let your whiteass body stick out even more. Rental boards are the biggest sign that screams "I am a Hoale Kook and my Sumoan ass is going to kick the shit outta you if you get in my way."

The best thing you can do is sit on the beach and watch the break for awhile and then paddle out with confidence (even if you are scared shitless) and when you come to the first person sitting in the lineup give a big smile and ask 'em how its going or something along those lines. Smiles go a long way there. Just don't drop in on anyone.

The Islands and the peeps there will respect you if you show them respect first. If you don't show respect you are fucked and you might just get ass raped in the process. Not likely but still possible. I would say your more likely to meet and surf with some of the coolest peeps in the world. Have fun, I am jealous.

BTW, the cross between Polynesian/Hawaii'n/Caucasion chicks are unbelievably gorgeous. Enjoy!!!

i took my shortboard and rented a longboard when i got there (oahu, not maui). worked perfectly.

The south swell breaks from Makena to Kaanapali. North swell breaks from Lahaina to Windmills and around to Hookipa. Plenny south break along the Pali hiway heading into Lahaina. Some easy stuff by Puuamana. Don't hit the harbor at low tide or you'll be maki on the reef if you're just learning.

drive around the beaches til you see a spot with a lot of trucks with racks.
you'll get good vibes and waves.
