-40F at Jackson. Went out to start the car. It complained bitterly, so I think I just went back inside.

skiing, about -30ishC at rabbit hill when I was 12 and raced. I remember the hill was closed except for the race and we were only allowed outside for our run.
I was offered a position doing snow fieldwork for one of my classes in Churchill MB in February... That could be intense!

Do you mean to tell me that it was so cold that you don't remember for sure if you went inside?

I've been in the minus 40's a couple of times. I've had serious frostbite, including this year, when the wind chill probably made it even lower. It's funny that even the times I've had frostbite, the temps didn't feel THAT bad to the rest of my body.
I detest sweating (and then later freezing) so much that I generally dress on the light side, usually wearing only an outer shell and a synthetic shirt. One time, the lighter layering caught up with me in a big way.
It was the coldest I've ever felt. We were staying at a mountain home at Beaver Creek in December of '96 and decided to go over and ski Copper. It was only -15 or so, but we could tell in the parking lot that it was going to be a heinous day.
We stuck it out the whole day, but I've never felt so cold in my life. I had a shell, a 'wicking' t-shirt, and a synthetic shirt. It was mind-numbing, aching, excruciatingly cold. I remember the wind was pretty wicked, but I wouldn't have thought it strong enough to inflict the pain that we experienced that day.
Whenever I think about that day I still get chills.

Oh, and there have been several days that were so cold that they've burst the soda can in my jacket pocket. When that happens it's not that much of a mess because it's mostly a frozen block by the time it bursts.

You know, there ARE ways to lower the temperature at which Soda will freeze.

Speaking of cold...I'd love to hear from someone who was out in Mt. Washington's new low that was just set: -44F with a windchill of about -90F. What the crap??!!

Granted, you won't be able to keep your soda in the can after that.

Coldest for me was weekend before last at Baker. Sat I think it was 7 to 9F. Didn't feel bad, skiing was good. The next day was closer to 0 F. It felt much colder for some reason. Lasted almost 4 hrs. then bagged it for hot cocoa in the lodge. Doesn't seem all that cold after hearing some of these other temps but thats damn cold for the PNW!
When I was a kid we visited my grandparents in Minneapolis and it was -40F. Just had to go outside to sled but only made one run down the little hill in the yard before fleeing for the house.
In drove this drunken madman and stopped on a dime! Unfortunately the dime was in Mr. Rococo's pocket!

-25F at Gore last January, no wind and bluebird at the bottom, but riding up the high speed triple my friend (with his helmet and gloves off and his coat unzipped) remarks "at least its not windy", all of a sudden the wind kicks up to about 25 Mph, don't know whatkind of wind chill that works out to, but it was cold.

-40 C (-40 F) at Tremblant a few years back. They closed the peak as it was -76 C with the wind. Blue bird day though, which are always the coldest.

I was there for the week and it never went above -30 (without the wind). F-it that was damn cold.

I remember all the New Yorkers mulling around the weather report in the base lodge openly questioning the validity of those temps and trying to figure out a way to get the hell out of the PQ. Luckily for me, my body was filled with anti-freeze from the night before.

Dec 93 at Lake Louise. I was there for 4 or 5 days to ski, and shoot the Womens WC DH and SG. The temp ranged from 5 above to 14 below F. the whole time. Except for one sunny day, it snowed the hole time, very lightly, maybe 4 inches total. The sunny day was the coldest, and breezy.

I was standing on a windy ridge near the top of the SG, with a monopod and 300 mm lens, freezing my butt off. It's a wonder any shots were usable as i was doing more jumping up and down, and swinging my arms than shooting. I did get one shot published of Olga Boganskaya. She was one of the women, who, lacking face masks, had covered her exposed skin with white tape. The cutoff point for running the race was about 1 degree lower than the temp.

I slept in my van in the Crystal Mt Parking lot one night when it hit 24 below! Chill factors hit 80 below on top of the mt. The REX chair could not run due to the hydraulic fluid jelling the previous day. That day the mt ws closed. It had recently snowed a bunch, and the fresh pow was blowing off Rainier and surrounding peaks, making the sunny sky a eerie gray. One other cold spell in the early 80's reached similar low temps also. Pretty rare for the PNW!!

That same day, at Mt Hood Meadows, reps were preparing for Dealer Demo Days, where it was even colder. Wind chills at the mt top were estimated at some ungodly number of 170 below or so!!!

Magic's closed today 'cause of the cold www.magicmtn.com.

As for the question, I remember playing hockey when it was -4F when I was a kid. Really hard to stretch my down jacket over my shoulder pads and then stretch my jersey over that!

From the Mt. Washington web site:

    07:08 PM Wed Jan 14, 2004 EST
    Temp: -28°F
    Wind Speed: 53 MPH
    Wind Chill: -71°F

Our phones have been ringing all day today with inquiries of our temperatures. Yes it is cold up here, even by our standards. Over the past twenty four hours, the lowest wind chill was 102 degrees below zero... but I can tell you, it felt more like 500 below to me! Once again we have recorded a new record low today of 45 degrees below zero. Now our focus shifts to Thursday night, when a low moves by while intensifying over the Canadian Maritimes, driving even more cold air into the region. There have been talks of fifty degrees below zero Fahrenheit, which would break New Hampshire's state record low of minus 47, which was set up here in 1934. Wow, was it really this past June that we tied our own record high of 72 degrees?

-65 with wind on Madonna at Smuggs.
Couldn't buy a lift ticket w/out full body coverage.

Just me & my buddy doing laps all day long. Basically had the top of the mountain to ourselves. Funny, the cold didn't seem to bother us that much.

    Coldest Braved?

It would be so easy to put up a smart-ass derogatory comment about my ex-wife's genitals here...overused, beaten to death, re-run, been-there (I'm referring to the comments...of course)

It would also be easy to post pics, but let's not go there...
