I skied a day at Keystone with a reported wind chill of -50 F. That number was on one of the whiteboards at the bottom of a lift, so I don't know how reliable it was. I seem to remember that the actual temperature was between -10 and -20 F, but the winds were insane. It was cold enough that I managed to get some mild frostbite sitting in a gondola out of the wind.

Skiing in Finland, 1991. I have no idea how cold it was, but it was without question colder than anything I had ever experienced. I remember a buddy and me laughing because we could spit into the air and it would hit the ground as ice.

You must have been in Antactica. NOAA reports lowest temperature ever recorded outside Antactica as -81.4F (Snag, Yukon Terr., Feb. 3, 1947).

So I'm kinda doubting the -80F claim, too.

-20 F at killington without windchill. My buddies pocket thermometer bottomed out -30F, i believe it was in the neighboor hook of -40F with the wind chill. Damn cold, my gloves kept freezing around the bar on the lift.

I can remember the exact day. January 12, 1997 day of the AFC Championship game (Pats vs. Jaguars). Grand Targhee, signs were reading -25F, none of the upper lifts were open and all lifts closed the next day b/c 2 patrollers experienced frostbite on the ride up! At least the Pats won...

coldest skiing was probably around -20F or so without windchill at alyeska one day a few years back. as i recall they ended up shutting down that day because it just kept getting colder and colder.

i spent a night outside on the deck of a remote cabin my family has a share in up near denali state park at what we estimated to be -35 or -40 (didn't stay up all night watching the thermometer, that's for sure). by far the most beautiful night sky sans northern lights i have ever seen. i watched a satellite burn to pieces on re-entry, shooting stars all over the place, and saw more stars than i could've ever possibly imagined existed. awe-inspiring...

I was at that game! That was, hands down, the best football game I've ever been to (including the Bears v. Pats Super Bowl in New Orleans). It was pandemonium in the stands for four quarters straight.

Ha! You've got something to egg on the grandkids with when they start whining.

Mine was -26 on my third day of skiing in a 5 day class at Killington. Two people in my class got frostbite on the face.

Nice. I have many of those days, sucks with my 30 mins walk to school. I finally pussied out and bought a parking pass.

It was -35 C the other night with no wind. I can easily handle those temps, I just hate when the wind picks up.
Yep, seen this before. Crazy liquor & cheeseburger party got out of control.

Skiing: somewhere around -25F at Alyeska
Snowmobiling:somewhere around -50F in the Chugach.
Coldest fire I ever fought: Motel fire in Homer at -27F

Coldest it ever was inside my cabin in the morning when I woke up: -28F.

It's a bitch to get out of bed and get dressed at that temperature.

for skiing most likely tomorrow night for my first race of the season.

They are forecasting -14, without the windchill.

Other than that one time I was in Canada on New years it it was somewhere in the negative 30's. I think after about 0 it all just starts to feel the same.

One Sunday at Kirkwood (1989?) at least a decade ago. Coldest winter airmass I'd ever seen over the Sierra. Temperatures in the Sierra at localized pocket valleys ie Truckee Meadows or Hope Valley regularly drop below zero from sinking pooling cold night air. But this was different in that there was arctic air at all areas and elevations. Crystal clear air, high winds, and quite a ground blizzard on all windward slopes. Thus wind chill had to be pretty ugly. Temp started out in morning about zero degrees F and rose just a few digits. Thought it would be a real challenge to stay out and ski so I dressed up like the Pirelii tire man. Did stay out most of the day too though I remember it wasn't always pleasant. When I drove home to the SF Bay Area, it was the only time I've ever reached home with some snow still atop my car as it was only in the mid 30s most of the way back.

An old bumper friend of mine that went to school at Stowe has told me several horrow stories that would make my experience like a fun day at the beach. -dave

Indianhead Mountain, MI, circa 1970, -43F w/20+ gusts.
1 run on this 638 foot vertical monster left white nose and earlobes. It was a DH race day where the best wax found was a mix of lock graphite and Homenkoll red.

Through most of highschool, my earlobes were like crunchy potato chips, except they oozed. Racing CUSSA was cold bidness.

I worked at this snow park once as an emt. I had to stand at the top of the tubing runs one night. I think it was -5 degrees with winds of at least 30 mph. I fell asleep on the hill. Some one from the base had to come get me. They say I was pretty out of it that night.
