    The Backcountry

"Much of the great recreation in the backcounty is in avalanche terrain. We can ingore avalanche conditoins but that often means acceptiong high risk. Or, we can assess the snow condionts and pick routes that have low risk under current conditions. Some days we will have to avoid some great slopes. Under better condtions, we can enjoy those same slopes. Occasionally,we may have to pass on the back country and seek out the controlled terrain in a ski area."

    Exclamation CAIC says...

"Hence to not drop your guard as the Colorado snowpack is notorious for the deep failure give the right set of circumstances after a storm cycle like we just saw. Expose one person at a time to any avalanche terrain, if for no other reason than it adds less stress to the snowpack. Plus it is much better to have 4 people looking for one rather than 1 person looking for 4. Always have escape routes in mind, avoid slopes with nasty terrain traps, & carry the right gear. In other words, always try to minimize the risks."

recent reports from the field indicate sketchy snowpack with big slides occuring even in places that have already slid big previously. let's be careful out there...
