I grew up oblivious of skiing. By the time I actually learned what people could do on skis, sparking an irrervable obbsession with skiing the fat ski revolution had taken place, half pipes were cut by pipe dragons, the park became a hang out for skiers and the countless other inovations in the late nineties had already happened. I missed the golden age of skiing a time when to ski powder you had to be in shape, a time when the people in the movies were constantly back seat, a time when snowboards didn't have twin tips and skis where straiter then yards sticks, and almost as skinny.
I missed a lot of skiings history things that I nw take for granted, like floating through powder with ease, when new lines were taken down in bounds, when bg mountain comps were small and were held on moguled corn.
I got Groove by Greg Stump in the mail from netflix today and realized that the movies today lack soul, lack stories, lack IN YOUR FACE POWDER for more then half the movie. I look forward to watching P tex lies and Duct Tape, and Blizzard of Ahhhs soon I hope, then on to the 1990s with MSP and TGR starting up. I'm getting educated on our great sport and its about time.
My point is simple respect the old school, while they weren't throwing 100 foot backflips, doing 1440 d spins, or logging more backcountry turns then heli turns, the skiers of old skied things with strait skinny long skis that I wouldn't like to try on my 188 bro models. Respect to the old school.
