The past week has been a whirlwind. Went from backpacking in Kauai to riding light and fluffy Colorado pow within a matter of hours. The skiing has been pretty decent lately. Small systems rushed through the state over the course of the week, dropping just enough to make the skiing good. The end of the week brought a decent upslope storm, stacking up to 18" of fairly light pow along the front range mountains. Got to tour with some old friends and some new friends along the way. Maybe the pictures below will bring 'surf the earth' out of lurk mode and he'll start posting.

Storm day. Good skiing, 7" of new, on top of 6" of 2 day old fluff. Upslope starting to kick in. RMNP.
Dragontail couloir:
Didn't quite get it this time.
Conditions were pretty good. Lot's of loose snow sloughs coming down, but no deep instability to be found.

RMNP. Storm's a brewing. A good 7" of fresh on top of a soft layer. Good skiing.

The Elvis pic is my favorite one
When Iskibc called me up and said, "Vail pass... tomorrow... sleds" I was in the middle of a run down the Elevator Chutes in Winter Park. I was down.... but little did I know that it was not just a dawn patrol, but it was an "Oh My God I have to wake up at 3am" dawn patrol It was worth it though. Vail Pass was money.... and a reward after not tackling the couloir on Sunday.

We made an attempt to climb and ski the Dragon's tail couloir off Flattop, but decided to turn back about 3/4 of the way up after numerous loose snow slides came down the couloir from spindrifts and snow from the narrow gulley above. A good 18" of light snow had accumulated in the couloir, making our attempt unsafe for that day. The pack below was bomber and wasn't going anywhere, however, after I got buried up to my waist in a loose snow slide, we turned around and went elsewhere.
