I was never a dog person, the opposite really, i had a dog phobia for the most part. I got chased on my bike by dogs as kid and that stuck with me. As an adult I mostly saw dogs as a pain in the butt I wouldn’t want. But my girlfriend loved her brothers golden retriever and eventually he stayed with us so much that he became ours fulltime.

I grew fonder and fonder of him over time. And ended up quite attached to this beautiful animal. His personality was so thoughtful and was nothing but a joy to us.

Out of no where last June he laid down, and didn’t get up. So we took him to the vet. He had cancer around his heart and we had to put him down that same night. He was so full of beans that day and now we were putting him down. It’s was fuckin terrible, watching the light leave his eyes and his face droop to lifeless. Ugh it was brutal. We miss him everyday.
Hopper went from walking a few miles a day running and playing in the yard and just generally being a happy and most grateful critter to gone in 4 days. We think it was her liver that quit and the vet agreed. There was no help for her, at least not one that wouldn't mean borrowing a huge amount of money, so we gave her the best 4 days any old (14 yrs) dog could've asked for. There's always that hope that it's not really as bad as it seems so we may have had her hold on one day too long but when she couldn't get up the look in her eyes told the story. It was during covid so everything had to happen outside. We laid on the ground with her, I held her head in my hands and was nose to nose with her until the last breath. I still cry thinking about her. She was our first rescue, she was so afraid of men that she wouldn't go near me for the first week we had her, she'd curl up into corners and wouldn't let us do things to make her comfortable but when she finally opened up the love this dog had to give was overwhelming. She didn't just cuddle she tried to crawl all the way inside you. When she needed a hug she'd let us know in no uncertain terms. I really miss this doghttps://photos.app.goo.gl/bA1GEfi71Rzbysb88 Hopefully this link works, I can't seem to post the pic.

    It's just a dog.

His name was Willie...Tennessee Willie, and he was a good boy. He was also a man of many nicknames...all frequently used.

    Willie
    Tennessee Willie
    Widds
    Bill
    Billy
B (my daughter used this one)
William (my wive called him this)
    The Sheriff
    Richard (Dick)
    Richie
    Rich (my son's favorite)
Rick (this was my go to)
    Ricardo
    Tip Toe Timmy
    Jeffrey (Dahmer)
    Sweater Jeff
    Shitface

He wasn't a smart man, but he was a sweetheart of a boy. My daughter loved him more than anyone, and always asked to take him everywhere.

We had him longer than we expected...diagnosed stage 4 bladder cancer 7 months ago, and it had already spread throughout his abdomen back then. He went downhill quickly 2 weeks ago..such a fucking trooper the whole journey.

He LOVED to get after it and stayed true to the end. He was still fired up right up to the moment they put him down...Fucking brutal. I was a wreck driving him there...just lost it for a few minutes with him panting in my face, loving the ride. He ended up passing in my wife's arms that "doesn't really like him"...so fitting. I feel good now that it's over and he's not suffering anymore.

Cheers to my good boy whose sniffing some ass and having the best time right now.

    So sorry Booner.

The pain of being responsible for letting them go is the price we pay for having them take over our hearts, lives and couches.

Shitface was clearly one of the very best dogs.

I'm crying, but I am a sucker for animals. RIP Willie, you will be missed by us all.
Never in U.S. history has the public chosen leadership this malevolent. The moral clarity of their decision is crystalline, particularly knowing how Trump will regard his slim margin as a “mandate” to do his worst. We’ve learned something about America that we didn’t know, or perhaps didn’t believe, and it’ll forever color our individual judgments of who and what we are.

I'll miss seeing TGR's most distinguished gentleman in the Dog Stoke thread. He was a good one Booner, or at least a charismatic idiot who photographed well.

I never thought I'd get choked up about some random dude on the internet's dog that lives on the other side of the country but here we are. RIP Tennessee Willie.
