Utah Split Board Invasion Day #1

Hooked up with a couple split boarders while they are in town for their little get together. Riders were Bcrider and his friend Dave. They drove all night from Tahoe, at some grease at Denny's, then met me for some skiing at 7:30am. Burning the candle at both ends.

    Up, up, up, up...............

Bcrider sequence. Why he came to Utah.

    Re-emergent.

    I think he likes it.

    Dave having fun.

    Back up, up, up, up............

    And up..............

Out of towners get first tracks, especially when they've been up all night driving.

Exiting the couloir. They thought I was generous for giving them first tracks, but there is a nice ramp entrance nearby that harbors untouched pow.

The snow down lower was more California like, making Bcrider feel right at home.

After a couple good runs, I lied a bit about the approach to the Weed Wacker. Yeah, it's just a short jaunt over, trust me. But after the slog, the turns were worth it. Even if it was a bit tracked.

I lost any potential for a guides tip right here, with the clients getting wet feet. Don't want them thinking the Wasatch is all fun and games.

The highest danger today was the walk back to the car, with all the idiot Utah drivers on the road.

Bcrider and Dave are good company. Nice to finally ski with them.

Thanks for showing us around Trackhead! It was great to finally meet you. We scored sweet conditions and new lines, we couldn’t ask for much more.

    Xover,
Good talking with you on the phone Friday morning…you shoulda came with us.

Dishwasher Dave and I left Tahoe at 9:15pm on Thursday night and rolled into the SLC at 6:30am. The drive was long but our stoke for the trip made it go by quickly. It took us a little longer than last time due to sections of snow in Nevada and western Utah. After a really crappy breakfast at Denny’s we met Trackhead at the mouth of Big and set off for a day of turns.

Here are my pics and thanks again TH!

Trackhead and DD heading up the ridge.

TH back for more…note the knee deep skin track.

For the next run we touched the summit...

    and enjoyed some nice views.

Another party was dropping in on a nearby line, one of which was a Splitfest attendee from Jackson Hole. Nice lines greg!

TH took us to this little gem and even let us get first tracks. What a guy!
    Dishwasher Dave slays it.

    bcr exiting (DD pic)

TH decided to check a slightly different line and was stoked he did. New lines are always good.

    TH lower down.

DD setting up for the Houdini…

    now you see him…

    now you don’t.

The sun was setting up the powder but we still made the most of it.

    DD

At the bottom we practiced skiing our splits (without skins) for the Saturday dj tour before heading back up for one last shot back to the cars.

At this point the 3hours sleep I got in the car the night before was starting to catch up to me. I fell behind a little and didn’t end up taking any more pics. The last climb and run down (new for us Cali folks) were sweet though.

At the bottom TH searches for “the log”. Seems we missed it by a little bit. It was a small price to pay for the incredible day we had.

    DD didn’t mind either.

    TH

As Trackhead said, the crux of the day was walking the road back to the car. And they say Californians drive like assholes.

    THANKS again Trackhead!

ps. day 2 and 3 were good too.

Utah has the worst drivers I've ever experienced. It seems when I'm there, a couple people a day die in traffic accidents. Nice pictures, looks almost worth the dumb drivers.

Glad you had a good trip out here man. Can't ask for better tour guides than Trackhead and wra. And ya didn't miss much not skiing with heckleover, except well, the constant heckling.

And Trackhead man, goggles really do work.

    Thumbs up

Letting a SNOWBOARDER go first??? What were you thinking?? Don't you know we all just like to sideslip down hills to groom them for skiers (and don't say you skiers don't appreciate our work for you )

Nice pics, nice action, setting sights now on splitboard as I just don't have it on the skis. I am not giving up, but need to add in the split at this point (well, by/during next season).

Chris, glad you got the goods and sorry to have missed you. Work and 1 year old is my life currently. Lucky to have 16 days under my belt.

ha! Today was deeper, lighter, faster, colder, and friggin unreal up there today. Same place, same tour, incredible snow.

Maybe I saw you coming out, in Cardiff?

Wait, you were on Naxo's? Ok, your buddy was flying up the track on his snow shoes. Never seen anyone move so fast on snow shoes before. Holy shit.

How about that East Face exit, eh? MONEY! And the WeedWacker was even deeper.

Great to here! Git sum for me!

    ps. cool pics skifishbum.
Props to your buddy too, I can’t even fathom the effort it took to ascend that snow on those little MSR snowshoes.

Dudes a freak tours in cotton and sweats his ass off. One of my main partners has lost the love and the other has fallen in love w/ a hottie border chick. Glad to still have a rock solid partner. I told him TH was sandbaggin him if he wanted to he'd kick in the dyno afterburners and leave almost anybody laggin. The nice thing about that place is there is almost always a skin track and the descent options are always more numerous than the number of visiters.
I really like those new naxos stepping in is like slaming a car door, only they weigh about as much.
