Meet the man and legend this weekend!
Legendary film maker Warren Miller will be in Aspen/Snowmass Jan. 10-11, hosting a book signing - with a portion of the proceeds benefiting Challenge Aspen. Miller has been making ski films for more than 50 years and he published his first book about skiing in 1945.
Miller will be at Aspen Mountain in the gondola plaza on Saturday, Jan. 10, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and outside of the Snowmass Ticket Pavilion on Sunday, Jan. 11, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Look for the Warren Miller tent and banner at each location. In addition to his book, Warren’s World, he will also have videos, DVDs and photography for sale. Miller will also make an appearance on Aspen Today on Channel 16 at 7:47 a.m. on Saturday morning.
“Warren and I have been friends for a long time and it’s great to have him in Aspen/Snowmass, said David Perry, senior vice president, Aspen Skiing Company. “His impact on the ski and snowboard industry is immeasurable. It’s a great chance for people to meet a true legend and to benefit Challenge Aspen.
Challenge Aspen, a non-profit organization, was formed in December 1995, when it took over the 25-year-old adaptive ski program from Aspen Skiing Company. Their mission is to provide recreational and cultural experiences for individuals who have mental or physical "disabilities." They encourage family and friends to share in these experiences. Co-founded by Houston Cowan and Amanda Boxtel, Challenge Aspen responded to the needs of the disabled community by evolving into a year-round program offering access to a variety of sports and recreational and cultural activities.
“This is a great opportunity for people to be exposed to our organization and learn about Challenge Aspen, said Amanda Boxtel, director of special projects/co-founder, Challenge Aspen. “We’re grateful to Warren and everyone else who helped put this event together.
Amazing Snow Stats
The recent storms left behind 40 inches in seven days. That's over three feet of fresh powder in the first week of 2004!
Nearly six feet of snow fell in Aspen/Snowmass from December 20
through January 4. In November, we received almost double our monthly average. December brought 150 percent of our average. Now, in just the first week of January, we've already received 70 percent of average January snowfall. The current base depth at the top of Aspen Highlands is 68 inches. "The whole valley looks like a winter wonderland," said Mike Kaplan, senior vice president of mountain operations, Aspen Skiing Company.
