    snowing in seatown

3" outside my house right now and still coming down hard. School is closed, and I don't have to make it up at the end of the year because I'm a senior.

The downside is, I have a fucked up knee... but I think the doctor either said "Rest your knee and don't ski for three weeks" or "If you can, go do some urban jibbing." I don't remember which one he said, but he probably told me that I can hit some in-city rails.

It's pretty much a holiday in the Puget Sound region today. All schools but UW closed, gov't offices, museums, etc. all closed too.

And here's the sad thing, there is only 2-6" of snow on the ground.

Note to would be terrorists: forget bombs and chemicals. Just drop a few inches of snow on Seattle and widespread panic ensues. The city will effectively be shut down.

The entire eastcoast and midwest is laughing at us right now.

yesterday they held a press conference with the Nat Weather Svc and it was broadcast on all 3 main networks, trying to scare people into staying home... It's ridiculous for the most part, but I wouldn't want to be trying to navigate any downtown hills right now. Queene Anne is surely a snarl w/ Expeditions crashing into Escallades.

Bastards finally canceled school 20 minutes ago. I'd be at Alpental right now if they had done that 4 hours ago.

Yes, we are. I was cracking up last week when Portland TV told everyone to either stay inside or use chains when driving in the city. For 2" of snow! Come on people. I know you're not used to a lot of snow in the city, but act better than Atlanta, GA fir chrissake [/disgruntled ECer]

Yeah, it's pretty classic to sit back and watch WC towns just stop because of an inch and a half of snow.

Noone has snowtire or chains or had any clue how to drive on snow here. I'm too afraid of getting hit by some maniac to bother skiing now.

"...and now, back to Winter Storm '04 coverage."

We have 5" here. Someone just called and asked if it was safe for her to drive the 3 blocks from her house to the market. I told her she might get arrested for violating the stay home order. Then I told to drink lots of hot chocalte and Baileys and pass out. When she wakes up tomorrow, it will all have been just a bad dream.

I'm going to be somewhat disappointed if no one on this board posts a picture of themselves skiing down Queen Anne Ave. So who's going to do it? Come on!

I've got a nice hill right outside my door (80th going down to Aurora), but I don't think it's closed to traffic.

I call dibs on the 45th St viaduct.

Edit: Damn, I guess people are sledding down it already.

Another kicker: This storm isn't putting much down in the mountains yet. Check out the NWAC telemtery. There's more accumulation here than at Snoqualmie.

Not everyone. The DC area schools ALL closed for the day once last year when there was a THREAT of snow. It never happened. Schools closed, Bread & TP sold out, many Chicken Littles losing sleep... FOR NOTHING!!!!

BTW - I work in TV, yet I HATE it when the weathermeatpuppets (Sorry, Red Baron) claim we're "lucky" we didn't get snow or that the temps are above freezing in January. Then they always add "... except for the SKIERS..." while giggling or rolling their eyes...like we're some kind of mutants.

EVERY kid I know would rather play in the snow than on brown, dead grass.

Ghost town at work and on the commute. I wish every commute was this easy! I'll probably blow off early - there's a sick line down Roosevelt St. near my house that I've been eyeing for years. Now that it has enough coverage it will be mine. Oh yes, it will be mine.

AD - do you live east or west of Aurora? I heard they closed 85th heading down to Aurora, so you might have a shot at 80th.

I made into work today just after 7:00 and two hours later found out the the VP for research, who I technically work under, ordered his staff not to report in. Fukker! Only a third of my office was in and we called our director who promptly gave permission for us to bail.

I'd gladly go skiing, but I-84 was just shut down and Hwy 26 is going to be a total clusterfuck this late in the day.

I live west of Aurora. I was just outside and so far 80th is still open.

Here's my house as of about 15 minutes ago.

Snow was coming down pretty good all morning, but has really tapered off in about the last hour. Maybe it's the mountains' turn now.

We're laughing a little at you in MT, too. Our last storm formed one-way 8" ruts in my hood. It looked like we lived in the middle of nowhere. It takes one week for the city to get around to plow our streets, and we live right in town. The country folk would have it worse, but they usually own their own plow/bobcat/etc. I need to get a snowblower or figure out how to attach a blade to the front of my car.

Hey char, don't worry. I drove to Alpental with my kids (schools closed, and joshbu changed his mind) and besides the fact that it was freaking cold (5 degrees F at the bottom with 20 mph of wind on chair 1), they closed the hill for some time for avalanche control work. Very dry snow, but on top of an icy crust. We got a couple runs and a lot of tears (5 degrees is tough for a 4 year old who weighs 35 lbs all wet) and that's it.

All, be careful in the BC in the next few days. Lots of wind loading going on right now.

Be careful on the streets too. I slid my wife's minivan, and it has ice-rated winter tires. Of course, the !@$_!@&$!@$_%!@#$ guy who started right in front of my car helped me not drive as smoothly as I wanted. And he had the nerve to flip me the bird and yell when I honked to warn him we were about to collide. That didn't help with my concentration either. I guess having the $$$ to afford living on the lake doesn't necessarily mean decent persons.

The highway to Alpental was very decent, up and down, except for high winds and people driving in the wrong lane.

Funny I went to Gonzaga for two years before I became a super cool skibum dropout. I heard it was wicked cold there last week. I would be a junior this year, what year are you?

I went into work this morning, and by 12 I was one of the only people left so I tossed in the towel...probably about 5" or so on the ground here in Bellevue. Lots of turned around cars on the way home, some real stupid drivers out there.
