Magazine Names Honolulu the Fittest City
Mon Jan 5,12:52 PM ET Add Health - AP to My Yahoo!

NEW YORK - A new survey by Men's Fitness magazine shows Honolulu is the fittest city in the country for the second straight year, followed by San Francisco and Virginia Beach, Va.

Denver; Colorado Springs, Colo.; Seattle; Boston; Portland, Ore.; Tucson, Ariz.; and Sacramento, Calif., rounded out the top 10 list. The magazine will hit newsstands on Tuesday.

The magazine also named Detroit as the fattest city, kicking Houston from its three-year reign in the top spot. The scales tipped Detroit's way because of a jump in television viewing, cold climate, poor air quality, and inadequate access to health care, the magazine said.

Houston officials were pleased, although the sixth annual survey made it clear their city still could stand to lose more than a few pounds.

"We were just ecstatic to not be the fattest city," said Lee Labrada, a former Mr. Universe, who was named Houston's first fitness czar in 2002.

Texas had five of the 10 fattest cities, including Dallas, San Antonio, Fort Worth and Arlington. Others in the top 10 were Chicago, Philadelphia, Cleveland and Columbus.

I can only wonder what their criteria were; Portland, overall, is not a fit city- in fact, I've seen more morbidly obese people here than anywhere.

They evaluate the cities on things like number of donut shops, number of health clubs, number of parks, etc. Of course the one thing that is NOT in the equation is average weight of the people in the city! Not that that stat is easy to come by, but kind of funny that the "fattest city" is in no way evaluated by weight.

"The fitness magazine rated the nation's 50 largest cities using 14 criteria, including the number of health clubs and sporting goods stores per 100,000 people; fruit and vegetable consumption; commute times; and the number of public basketball and tennis courts, golf courses and swimming pools per capita. "

Of course it being MENS FITNESS MAGAZINE I am sure that they included a survey for each place on what was the best place to get your delts blasted and your chest waxed at the same time.

I suspect that part of the reason Houston always shows up high on that list has to do with the abundance of cheap restaraunts. Houston is full of great places to eat for under $10. As a result people eat out A LOT (I seem to remember that Houston has more restaurants per capita than anywhere else). When it's cheap and easy to eat out, you do it more often, and end up eating less healthfully.

Note: I have NEVER skiied in a cowboy hat, but I might just barely be a Texan.

i believe san francisco wins in most restaurants per capita. or at least the highest turnover. check out these stats:

there are ~1800 restaurants in SF at the end of every year.
Every year, 1000 new restaurants are founded.
The total number of restaurants has remained at ~1800 for the past 5 or so years.

    thank god for good food

Many years ago, I was on a recruiting trip to Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. One of my hosts was this super cute grad student named Sydney. During some group dinner thingy she showed up with permed hair, a sequined blouse, and some sort of pants with images painted on (I was already too drunk to tell what). I said to myself "She needs to lose those clothes". Towards the end of the evening I ended up alone with her and she walked me back to my hotel room. I convinced her to lose those clothes...
