Unhappy Contest #45932 - Worst Current Snow Report

    Mountain Creek. Today (05-Jan-04):

Due to unfavorable temperatures and precipitation, we will be closed on 1/5/04. Our snowmakers are looking forward for the low temperatures early in the week so we can all get back to what we love doing. Keep checking back here on Monday for updates on reopening.

    Jay Peak today:

Who stole our snow?!?!? ALL of the forecasts were indicating that the snow would start late last night and continue until the end of the day today and yet we have nothing – not one fraction of an inch of accumulation. This unexpected glitch is making this morning’s snow report a whole lot less fun than it should have been!

Jay Peak will be open today from 9:00am ’til 4:00pm with all lifts and 65 trails and glades. We groomed extensively overnight and conditions today will include a machine groomed hard pack base with frozen granular surfaces and icy spots in exposed/high traffic areas. Temps are still expected to be in the low 20’s with southeasterly winds at 10mph, with gusts up to 20mph.

Magic Mountain is not open today, Monday 01/05/04. We are firing up the snow guns as this is being typed. It is still snowing here this AM and the combo of man made snow with the 2"-4" of natural white we received last night should facilitate an excellent day on the mountain tomorrow.

    Yeah right.....

    And.......

Magic Mountain is not open today, Tuesday 01/06/04. After making snow all night the mountain is still not safe to ski or ride. There are some very icy spots that snowmobiles and snowcats could not ascend, that being said, no skier/rider should be trying to descend the terrain.

    Their optimism is comic!

BTW.. I love how the rest of the country talks snowfall while we here talk snow making.

It's gonna be cold and crisp for the coming weeks, and that means we'll be making TONS of snow for some awesome conditions; and it's gonna be a long season (remember riding on April first last year?!) - the Farmers Almanac is predicting a late and heavy winter.

We're cranking up our snowmaking system to full power starting Tuesday morning, and we're keeping the mountain closed to allow us to make snow non-stop. We're expecting to reopen Mountain Creek South on Wednesday morning, and Vernon on Thursday morning. Snow Tubing is expected to reopen Saturday morning. As always, reports can change with the weather, so check back or call (973) 827-2000 before heading to the resort.

Her's my entry, my home mountain and place of employ.

    Snow Report Jan6th

Total snow fall to date - 89 cm (about 35 ")
Settled snow mid mountain - 50cm (about 20")

    High today -26 Celcius
    Clear skies

    Forecast clear and Sunny.

This is why I'm not all that bummed about not being able to ski for the next 2 weeks. I ain't missing much. HAsn't snowed (significantly, over 1 inch) in two weeks at least. This is the warmest day in 6. Wooo Hooo.

    Speaking of optimism:

    From Magic's site currently-

Reports from the slopes are that on the high side of the double fall line on Goniff's Glade there is still a stash of powder.

Speaking of shrinkage, here is today's report from Wildcat, NH:

Date Wed Jan, 14 2004 (updated at 06:25am)

Weather Forecast Wind chill warning tonight through Thursday night. partly cloudy with scattered flurries. Windy and much colder. Highs 11 below

Open Lifts Closed due to cold temperatures. Re-opening Fri.
    Open Trails 30+ for Friday
New Snow last 24 hours: 3

    Primary Surface Machine-groomed packed powder
Secondary Surface Mixed with loose&frozen granular
Winter Hours Base Depth 20-48 inches
    Grooming 80% of open terrain
    Conditions/Comments:

Good Morning! We did receive 3" of snow over the course of the day yesterday, on Tuesday, adding up to about 6 inches in the past couple of days! Nice skiing & ridng conditions! Tune in to ABC this morning at 7 & 8 am for "Good Morning America" being shot live in Pinkham Notch --must be the cool place to be!

At 5:00am it's about -20 here at the base. It's breezey, and the forecast calling for unusually SEVERE cold and wind for the next couple of days, i.e. wind chill values -40 to -50 below zero. Wildcat, therefore, will not be open Wednesday and Thursday for skiing & riding, but plans to re-open for regular operations on Friday, Jan. 16th. We apologize for any inconvenience to our Pass Holders, skiers, & riders --- but such conditions are not conducive to a fun and safe experience for you or for Wildcat's employees. And FUN is what it's ALL about up here at the 'Cat! Should circumstances change, then this is the place to look! The outlook for the long weekend is calling for a mix of clouds and sun and temperature highs in the mid to upper teens -- perfect, fun & safe skiing & riding weather!

Friday we're planning to operate 3 lifts, including the high-speed Quad, Bobcat and the Snowcat Triple Chair. We'll be skiing & riding on 30+ trails, including the Lynx from top-to-bottom, which is EXCELLENT! Expect a few more trails to open for the weekend. 80% of the open terrain will be machine-groomed. The surfaces are machine groomed packed powder mixed with loose and frozen granular. Very nice! Bundle up, and up-grade your tickets for the weekend when it's expected to warm up quite nicely!
