Definitely in for some avoiding of lifts next weekend - if things have settled out OK in the bc by Saturday I'll be bringing the AT rig up and hopefully be getting out to either the bumps or decker. Let me know if you get out there before then, and how things look.

    Fresher WB update:

    Monday, March 6th:

Apres: Longhorns at base of Whistler Village Gondola.
Evening: Tommy Africa's for Droopy and spdfrk43
    --------

    Tuesday, March 7th:

W/B people: Pow11 starts a group skiing the deep stuff on Blackcomb, lots of new snow forecast so likely staying in-bounds but never hurts to carry beacon/shovel/probe, meeting time is 9AM at the base of the Glacier Chair on Blackcomb. Just hang back from the end of the corral. Post-lunch regroup at 12:00, same place.
Maggots: Powder11, Droopy, spdfrk43, Eldo and group, shirk, skieast?, bklyntrayc?, MtnMan?, Roll-Gybe's flying around in a heli
Apres: Merlins at base of Blackcomb's Wizard Express (Upper Village near the Chateau Whistler)
    Evening: ??

Wednesday, March 8th: lots of mags arriving around the 8th

W/B People: probable that LeeLau starts a group storm skiing copious pow at Whistler, again avy gear never hurts but plan is to ski in-bounds, meeting time 9AM at the huge lightboard outside the Roundhouse on Whistler. Post-lunch regroup at 12:00, same place. Leelau sounds like he'll confirm later.
    Maggots: who's in?
    Apres: Longhorns?
    Dinner: ??
    Evening: ??

Avanlanche Advisory for WB - March 06, 2006

    Alpine: CONSIDERABLE trending to HIGH
    Treeline: CONSIDERABLE
    Below Treeline: MODERATE

Travel Advisory: Approximately 20 cm. of snow has fallen since yesterday morning. Mountain top winds accompanying the snowfall have generally been strong from the Southeasterly direction. The new snow layers are resting on a variety of old surface features varying from windslabs, soft slabs, windcrust, facets, surface hoar, as well as melt freeze crusts at lower elevations.

Avalanche Activity: We have seen widespread avalanche activity during the past week, with avalanches running within the storm snow and down to the old surfaces that date back to Feb 21. Soft slabs from 10 to 60cm in depth were observed to be reacting easily to the weight of a person this morning with widespread propagation. Some natural activity was observed as well. We are expecting a widespread natural avalanche cycle to occur in the backcountry during the next 24 hrs.

Snowpack: The storm snow layers that have fallen during the past week are resting on a variety of old surfaces as mentioned previously. In rocky terrain the snowpack turned to facets during the recent spell of cold temperatures. We have started to see avalanche activity within these faceted layers, and more activity can be expected with the forecast snowfall over the next few days. Below treeline a layer of surface hoar that formed on Saturday night is now buried by 20cm of new snow. We may see avalanche activity begin within this layer as well in some areas below the treeline. At lower elevations there is a melt freeze crust buried under the loose surface layers of snow.

Weather: A strong frontal system is forecasted to bring us 30-40cm of snowfall during the next 24hrs with continued strong winds. A more significant system is forecast to arrive for late Tuesday and Wednesday. The freezing level is forecast to stay between the valley and 1000m. during this period.

Travel in the backcountry is not recommended at this time.

Nobody interested in whistler tomorrow? Peak on a weekday powder day is the stuff dreams are made of (for me at least). Also haven't been up flute in a while, wouldn't mind doing that if I can see at least a tiny bit, and it seems like tomorrow is a better opp. for that vs. wednesday.

Im almost certainly confirmed for wednesday morning - will confirm meeting times by at least tomorrow. There is significant m/f crusts on south aspects; and there will be windloading on storm (ie NE/N) aspects so anything significant will be out of the question for Wed. I've done the bumps so much it hurts so I'll probably do secret-stash hunting on wednesday inbounds.

If I'll tour it will be either thurs or friday to give the storm snow some time to chill/.

Besides i've got an assload of work to catch up on/

I'm more into Whistler tomorrow as I'm in Creekside. Seems a waste to trek over to Blackcomb on a powder day (not much of a trek, more and up, down, then up again thing). I'll see whats going on tomorrow and make the decision then.

Okay this weather has me debating between Blackcomb side or Whistler side tomorrow.

Never had either on a powder day.

The usual rule is Whistler on a weekday and Blackcomb on weekends. Hmmmmm.

    This is DIVEGIRL...

I've had a great time so far...Lego, Uber and I finally got the car today - a new Explorer and I'm drivin' it, so now I have the balls!! hahahaha. Anyway it was great meeting a bunch of you already. And many thanks to Shirk/Squirrel for giving us a ride to the resort. Silent Storm should be thanked as well. It was good to meet Woodsy for the first time - but I expected him to be this humongous guy with a super deep voice and an ass-kicking demeanor. Glad to see him out here after the move.

I'm super excited to get up to Whistler...but only after a good day at Crystal with Buster H.

The best news for me personally is my knee - I skied a double black with crazy fun moguls and that worked out just fine, so I'm good to go. Except for the manky stuff - I'm still sketched out about skiing mank because that's exactly how I sprained the MCL in the first place. I can't wait to follow the maggot-pack on this trip at least once.

Ok then, see you all tomorrow.

well I am gonna head up to whistler tomorrow, I will just go to peak whenever there looks like a glimmer of hope that it will open. once the frenzy calms down, I will probably take a walk up flute bowl (provided you can see). I'll chill at the lightpost by the roundhouse for 10 minutes or so at 12:30, if anyone wants to meet up then and take a hike with me, meet me there. orange helmet, gotamas

might have been a little hasty with that, my update for tomorrow seems to be toast. It seems the maggots might be favoring the smell of Whistler pow. I think Wednesday's plan with Leelau is still intact.

PNW is all going to get hammered by this next system. But watch out, snowy roads down to sea level on Weds night & Thursday may be a bitch for those driving to WB. Go tonight if you can as the big storm hits around mignight.

    WB: 10" overnight, 23" in 48hrs
    Baker: 7" overnight, 10" in 24hrs
    Crystal: 0" overnight, 3" in 24hrs, 5" in 48hrs
    Alpy: 2" in 24 and 48hrs

Meet tomorrow 8:15am at Creekside; 9am at big lightboard; 11 am for quick lunch at Pikas - bottom floor of Rendezvous Restaurant. Even if alpine is closed it will be pretty sweet. I promise you'll be tired by the end of the day. Bring avvy gear if you have it.

Im not a fan of whistler when peak/harmony are closed. the lift lines get too crowded and the skiable terrain drops too low into wet glopland. Blackcomb has more lift options that get you higher up that your not sharing with gapers. I'll be in front of the longhorn for coffee @ 8:15; leaving for Blackcomb at 8:30.

I'll talk it over with Dodger and Up and Down when they arrive later tonight.

We may bus over to whistler from Creekside, or do the ride up and ski down route. If that we will have to meet up top. Maybe 9:30 @ Glacier?
