Reno is closer than flying into LAX. You can rent a car and drive ~2.5 - 3 hours depending upon roads. Basically straight down 395.

Reno is closer - try to hitch a ride with one of the Tahoe group (or with Splat, who is in Reno).
But from LAX, there's always some Maggot doing the drive north - lots of rides to choose from..
