Snowbird Powder Day = Locusts to the Harvest

Caught a nice dumping last Thursday in Utah....about 12"+ of fresh.....went to Snowbird for a first time powder day there....I have seen places get tracked out before and have heard this is common at Snowbird...but I figured a weekday would not have been too bad....wrong.

People decend on this place at an incredible rate.

I would say by 11:30 pretty much everywhere was pretty chopped up.....amazing, I have never seen a place of that size get tracked out so quick on a weekday.

I hear ya. Its always a buzz kill when it is a frenzy of people tracking the place out. That is why I likley wont have a season pass there next year...and will probally be at solitude.

 I have had many many many pow days at the bird and feel like it is pretty leisurely. Always can ski some fresh at the end of the day there.

at the basin, every double secret shot is done by 10:45 on a weekday (12 on a weekend).

If it is all chopped up by 11:30 you dont know where you are going. I will admit that last Thursday was too crowded, but oh well. Walk on trams yesterday and knee deep. So it cant be all bad....

The element of surprise - Reports say 2", you find 12". Those days rule.

Heh, i remember this year when we got that 12-14 inches on a saturday.....at least 10 maggots there. Pali wasnt even that busy early, but they dropped ropes all over and opened (for the season) almost everything in like 3 hours....place went from waist deep virgin runs for the season to totally tracked in 3 hours flat...insane..

Snowbird crowds really HAVE gotten out of control. They finally have the visitors they always dreamed of but they can't handle the current load. For the first time I am seriously considering either a dual pass or a pass somewhere else for next year. The 5 tram wait the other day was a joke.
With the limited time I have to ski I can't afford to stand around that long.

There are never any lines at Solitude and you can ski untracked all day.

You should try the Grands Montet in Chamonix. Fastest tracked mountain in the world. In high season on a big powder day the mountain is tracked to bits in 2 hours. The hidden stashes know only by the locals last myabe an hours or two longer, and as anyone who's been there will attest it ain't a small mountain.

Snowbird is definatly way to crowded on a powder day, I am thinking on the same lines of changing resorts due to the crowds. It's just giving up the tram on a noncrowded day and how many runs you can get in is great. My cousin had a solution for the crowds he said they should hold tryout for people to ski at the bird. I think there are to many people there who would benifit from spending money elsewere get more runs and access more intermidate terrain at another resort.
If ski companies didn't make new skis every year I wouldn't have to get new skis every year.

Solitude sucks! its flat, they get half the snow of Snowbird Alta,
its skied out before 9:00am every freaking powder day and it pisses me off!
Its so freaking crowded with jongs that its frustrating. next year I'm getting a powmo pass it will be worth the drive!

This happends at Kirkwood and even more so at Squaw.

Any spots with good terrain and less locusts in UT?

Sounds like the lower 48 lift served terrain may be played out?

It's all a trade off ---> terrain/snow quality vs. crowds. I have been to Alta on a Wednesday after, cough...cough, feeling a little ill, and thought it was Presidents Day weekend, spring break and Christmas are rolled into one. WTF? I stood in line for over 30 minutes, longer than the traverse to Devil's Castle from the top of Sugarloaf, the ride down, the slog through the creek bed and out. I don't need that for sure. Say what you want about Brighton, but damn, that place is usually deserted, even on weekends sometimes. Oh wait, Solitude is much better so go there instead.
It's not enough. I need more. Nothing seems to satisfy. I don't want it. I just need it.

Thats a really good story. Mr. Altagirl totally agrees about Brighton - he likes to jib there on Wednesdays, but not on a Wednesday that is President's Day weekend, spring break, and Christmas are [sic] rolled into one.
