    From EUrosport:

American Lindsey Kildow and defending downhill champion Carole Montillet-Carles of France both crashed heavily in downhill training on Monday. Kildow, who was air lifted to hospital in Turin, twisted her knee and hurt her back while while Montillet did not appear to be seriously hurt.

French coach Maurice Adrait told reporters that Montillet, 32, had been taken to the clinic at the athletes' village in nearby Sestriere where her condition was being assessed.

A source close to the French ski federation said the racer had banged her back and head.

Montillet, yet to win a world cup race this season, landed badly after a jump just 20 seconds into the Fraiteve Olympic course before smashing into the safety netting at top speed.

US medal hopeful Kildow's plight was much worse and it looks like the 23-year-old will miss the Olympics with a back injury.

Losing control on a tricky lip after a series of bumps midway through the course, Kildow did the splits before twisting her knee and back on impact.

After being tended on the piste by doctors, the American, who won two world cup downhills in December, was taken on a stretcher towards an air ambulance.

Ouch, her skis didn't come off .......

"Kildow was about midway down the course on Monday, skiing through a section of small hills, when her left ski appeared to catch in the snow and bounce to her left, away from her torso.

As Kildow crested another rise she instantly went airborne, landing with her legs splayed. Her lower left leg appeared to twist violently sideways at a sharp angle from her thigh. Kildow then fell hard on her lower back as both legs became entangled -- her skis never came off and she skidded to a stop lying on her back, where television cameras showed her calling out or shouting, her mouth wide open. Kildow lay in the snow for 15 seconds of so, her chest heaving, with her feet sideways on the snow pointing in opposite directions.

When more than a dozen medical personnel reached Kildow appeared to be crying. Kildow was attended to for several minutes as the race was delayed. She was removed by stretcher to another part of the course and roughly 30 minutes later, taken by helicopter to Turin, according to the press manager at the San Sicario Olympic venue, which is the hub for most of the women’s Olympic alpine skiing about 60 miles from Turin.

United States ski team officials gave no information on Kildows condition."
