The media is reporting that Lindsay may still race the downhill. I would be very surprised. Right now, the media is in a very tough spot. Thus far, the ratings for the olympics are very bad (worse than Nagano). Bode and Daron failed to medal in the DH. Michelle Quan (ph.) is gone. They need a story...bad. I hope that eveything goes well with LK.
If she does race, I will be in her corner.

She still has to qualify, though, correct? That means she'd have to be back on skis and ski well tomorrow. It sounds like a longshot, but would be impressive if she pulls it off!

Ditto. They might not be able to ski it as fast, but that doesn't mean they can't ski it.

My guess is that this is an ego-preservation issue as much as anything. If you can't compare times directly, the guys can't be teased for getting beat by a "girl."

When we race DH MTB courses, it's the same course for men and women, just different courses for easier classes. But there are sometimes go-arounds available on some of the nastier obstacles (available for people of either sex). You can't exactly do that on a DH skiing course.

Is this true? For example, in 2002 the men ran Grizzly and the woman ran Wildflower. I think that the courses are different, but not for the reason set forth by AD.

And yes, Lindsay is very hot!

Just to be clear, I am not advocating dumbing-down anything. I'd love to see a heads-up race - same day, same course.

last year at the world champs in bormio they had a team contest for the first time. i don't remember exactly how many people there were on each team, but i think they raced all 4 disciplines (not 100% sure either) on shortened courses (dh was shorter than "real" dh) w/ men and women on the same course. for the guys those were easy courses, for the girls they were pretty challenging. it was interesting to see the differences between on the exact same course.

Yes. I was comparing it to DH MTB. Sorry for being confusing - I edited it.

Race courses, especially like that, get rutted out and torn apart pretty quickly. So it would be unfair (and dangerous) for one group to get a clean course and the other to get one thats already been raced on.

I also think it's a strength/safety issue. Not many female racers have thighs like Bode or Hermann.

Well that does make sense in a way, I'm pretty sure that if they put it on different days and filled it in, it would be pretty good. I mean Derniaz skied near the end of the whole downhill competition (30th? if I remember correctly), when it was all rutted up by al the other riders, and he didn't do too shabby.

I've seen on many occasions where the men and women race on the same course with the exception that the women's start house is positioned part way down the course, so that kind of blows that theory in my opinion.
