    Thumbs up Ski Jumping

I've been glued to the TV watching the olympics - and one event that I am simply transfixed by is the ski jumping.

They did the small (95) hill yesterday for the nordic combined, and also showed qualifications for regular jumping on the small hill. Even for the small hill, the way those tiny guys (5-6-5'10, 120-130 lbs) just fly 100 m in the air is simply amazing to me.

Anyone ever tried ski jumping? It looks so cool, but man it looks tough holding your position like they do through the air. How do they practice that year round? And the skis they use are huge - wonder how they'd ski in the pow!?

Anyway, can't wait for the big hill event!

(I also saw the thread on TGR on the downhill event, but want to watch coverage later today so i am NOT reading it - so hard to keep the blinders on!)

I was pretty amazed, I'd never really paid attention to jumping before. I'm curious what is the standard pitch for the in-run?

Last night while sitting at the bar they had the ski jumping on tv. I couldn't hear any of it but I saw a few shots from the cable cam that really made the event look sick. It really gave a good perspective of how fast those guys are actually going.

It would be interesting to see one of those ski jumpers do Chads or Pyramid... they would probably completely overshoot and land on flat.

Yeah agreed it is a very cool sport. One weird thing is that they disqualified the top jumper in the normal event for having too little air going through his suit, or some something like that. The Seattle Times' daily sports comedy writer got some good material from that incident, for it seems everywhere he looked, there were no set benchmarks for that, or anything.

Tried jumping in a k35 hill a few years back and I think it was cool as hell.

I did it back in high school, but quit after hitting a 40m once in competition. It was pretty sketchy. It was like the Bad News Bears or something. A bunch of old equipment that didn't fit. The skis flopped around like cross country gear.

It's definitely worth going up to the top of a 70m or 90m jump just to check it out. Very impressive.

Their heels are still free. Correct form is to land in a telemark position, which would be impossible with fixed heels (obviously). The just must have really high spring tension so it looks like they are fixed when they are in the air.

I never realized before yesterday that the guys doing it were so small. Do lighter people have some advantage in ski jumping? Aerodynamics, maybe?

Their heels might be free, but they're not coming off the ski even in the "telemark " landing. The boots are so low and soft they can probably just bend the rear ankle.

Not just skinny, tall and skinny. THere's some helmet cam footage on the nbc olympics website.

Actually, I saw space between their heels and the ski. However, it appears that they use a strap there to prevent the skis from smacking them in the face.

There is a strap that connects to the back of the heel to keep the skis from coming up to far. Tall and skinny makes it happen. Your skis can only be so much taller than you. If you look close, most of their ski tips are ground down kind of squared to make them legal length.

Unless they're landing on their heads and walking away, I'm unimpressed.

back in the day the wasatch telemark series used to jump at bear hollow on telemark gear, not sure if they still do.
they let us go off the training jumps and competition was on the 35 or 40 meter hills. even off the little puppies, the speed you were carrying was impressive.
