    Back injury

    Hi there,

today I was skiing the resort (Sunshine-Village) saw a big huck on my way up the Gondola and went to hit it. Well I did hit it but as I pulled of the landing a huge piece of rock popped out of the snow and as I made my slowing down turn I hit it (at a very high speed). Both my skis ejected and I few literaly all the way down this hugely steep run and cranked m y back sooooo many times on the way down. It hurts when I roll my head forward right at the base of my neck and constantly further down closer to the bottom of my scapulas (shoulder blades). Any diagnosisis's and/or treatment suggestions?

    Thanks

sounds like a whiplash injury to me, but i'm no expert - but have had several upper back and neck injuries with symptoms similar to what you describe. Any numbness in your arms, face, or legs? That would be the main concern - some type of cord compression. If there is numbness, I'd get it checked ASAP. Otherwise, I'd ice, take vitamin I and let it settle down. After a few days, if it is still bothering you, i'd make an appointment to see the ortho and start with some x-rays. best of luck.

Thanks I would agree it is some sort of whiplash thing now that I think about it! How long would you recomend I stay off of skis or at least try and avoid the crazy stuff?

I got bad whiplash a few years ago from a car accident. blew a bunch of vertebrae out of place. Best thing for me was some deep tissue massage ( not that back rubbing shit ) then after a couple weeks, the spasms slowed down so I hit the chiropractor, then the gym. Start with way lower weight than you can do and concentrate hard on the muscles you are using. Trying to bump the weight up to soon just pops the vertebrae back out, and then you have to start the process over again. Trust me I learned the hard way. I tried to rush the weight right away, but I didn't realize how easily your muscles can pull your back apart if the tendons and ligaments and shit that hold them in place are totalled. As for time, I found that no two doctors said the same thing, but you will know. go out and test it, and if you feel a little tweak, tone 'er down.
    good luck
