I haven't been following bump skiing closely, (like, who can), but I have been getting nailed by early commercials, and lo and behold, pretty, well spoken, football star Bloom is all over the place. He's a natural, and will go far. We'll probably see him on the cover of Star with some movie tart next year. But what does that have to do with the competition? Eh?

    stupid.

Wait, what??? How does that have anything to do with what I posted? Your point was the olympics are too comercial and too ratings oreinted, while all I talked about was competition and predictions of who will win?

I myself am also sick of hearing about Bloom going to the scouting combine and about Bode's fat mouth and Michelle Kwann. (I can't believe people watch figure skating) I still want to watch the skiing events and the hockey though, thats waht it's all about, the stupid feel-good stories are for bathroom/safety breaks.

I was just about to post about how horrendously long and boring the opening ceremonies have been, when out of nowhere they had a ferrari F1 car doing donuts for no apparent reason. I guess that makes up for the 2 hours of dancing.
I think that the human mind is unique among all other forms of life in that it can spontaneously create unique thoughts and provide unique behaviors. Instead of rewarding that uniqueness we, for some reason probably because of cultural and social necessity, we chastise unique behavior and reward conformity.

OK, I just watched every second of the Opening Ceremonies. It's nice to see that other countries can make a celebration of Sports turn into a gloppy pile of cheese just as well as the US can - the cows had me howling - but there were some really cool moments. My favorites:

-The Ferrari F1 car doing donuts. AWESOME.
-The synchronized players forming a ski jumper... jumping! Loved the Motion effects
-The wall crawlers finishing with a Dove
-Sofia Loren... 71 and STILL hot
-The lighting of the torch (hey, I'm a sucker)
-The Old Man still owning "Nessun Dorma" like it was written for him

The Winter Olympics are by far my favorite Sporting Event. Game(s) on.

GRRRRRR. Reading this thread just makes me more pissed off. During the 2002 games, I remember reading on the forum that the folks on the canadian border could pick up BBC and watch events live. Meanwhile, we go to edited taped segments 10 hours after it happened. Horse shit. It goes on in my own country and I can't even watch it live.

So fuck NBC and everyone else that played a part in spoiling what should be my most favorite sporting event of the, uhh, every four years.

edit: cool new event: Eastern tree races. Head cams and moving cameras on cables would be cool.

I'll second that, it'd definitely be something interesting to watch. It'll be kind of like NASCAR......sure there's an event going on, but we only watch for the chance of a crash.

Um, that's the CBC. Canada's national broadcaster. The Mother Corp. Fuelled by our tax dollars and its own importance.

Actually, the CBC does a few things really well. Two of them are hockey and the olympics. If you can get it on satellite, behold and enjoy. Apparently, the olympics are one of the few times that it's a good thing to live in Detroit!

Just enjoy it while it lasts. The CBC has Torino and Beijing; after that, the oly rights go to CTV. They also do some things well, but in the past the olympics have not been one of them. Hope they get their shit together because their first games are Vancouver/Whistler in 2010.

siderant: on the opening ceremonies that were supposed to celebrate Italian culture(whatever that is) and the whole time the athletes are walking in they are playing rehashed disco hits and motown songs i thought i was watching a frikkin wedding reception and then the screaming siren whose only claim to fame is breaking up the beatles(and i'm not a big beatle fan) gets up with one piece of paper and squawks out a speech that a 3rd grader could have written and memorized in 5 minutes WTF...
Gabriel(who is usually worth seeing), singing "ïmagine" celebrates italian culture how? yeah, yeah the olympics are all about bringing the worlds youth together to celebrate peace, BS, they are there to frikkin WIN and then screw anything that moves while they are still "ölympic athletes" and don't have real jobs (yes i do know olympians in both summer and winter, so don't come back on this one)

will someone please tell the IOC that it is not the frikkin UN and just concentrate on sport and the athletes, and not political statements/posturing when they get their chance every 2 years

the ferarri doing donuts was the HIGHlight AFAIWC......
    did you hear that thing?

Maybe it wasn't so stupid today. The visuals of the ski jumping in the Combined was very nice - love that camera on the side. And if the weather stays like that for the downhill, that will be fun to watch. And no Costas!

The AD, nothing is wrong, i was trying to point out that while all the dignitaries are politicizing/preaching/pontificating and coming off all high and mighty, the main attractions(athletes) are looking at getting some...

So there ya go, I turn on the tube tonight, and Costas is interviewing Jerome Bettis about his Super Bowl win. Not anywhere close to one of the hundreds of participants of the Turin games. Jerome said he was really happy to be at the Winter Olympics, 'cause, uh, oh, he wanted to, uh, see the athletes. Good Lord.

    Yeah, the Winter Olympics suck.

At least there's no 20km and 50km walk event that is considered an Olympic sport.

Sure the coverage sucks. But I still love watching the Olympics, no matter what.

Ice dancing is strange. How is it different from the other ice stuff? The clothes are a little, um, wierd.

Didya see that women get thrown to the ice and get hauled off smiling on a stretcher? They smile a lot, even when they hurt like shit.

Didn't you know all figure skaters and ice dancers have the smiles glued wide open permanently just like gymnasts??

Totally different. No over the head lifts like in pairs. No jumps or spins. Basically, as the name implies, it's dancing on ice. I do think it's a little boring, but the athletes are phenomenal skaters.

If you wear a tuxedo while you do it, it's not a sport. It shouldn't be in the olympics.

If you don't break a sweat like in 20km and 50km walk, should that be in the Olympics?
