    Question Colorado snow?Aspen comp?

I'm heading to Colorado next week Mon. and staying for the Aspen comp. I know there hasn't been any snow in a few days over there, how is the snow holding up? Any ideas about where to ski prier to going to Aspen on Fri. the 17th? I guess my fear is that I will get out there Mon. and end up skiing on hard pack for the whole week.

Hey Lloyd, the burn still closed? Was closed when we were there too, for no apparent reason.....

Is it worth going up to a higher ski area like loveland? Or will it be the same?

    doc,

Higher altitude, north facing areas should still have some chalky winter snow, even recycled pow pow. Southerly stuff is developing crusts this week as it's been warm and sunny. Of course I haven't been out since it was dumpin' on Sunday, but that's a good general rule of thumb. Hopefully we get back on the storm track soon before my road bike gets unhooked from the trainer.

Sounds like your getting some spring type snow? Tahoe actually has great spring snow right now.

I hear that high is good now. Hell high is good all the time. I spoke with a friend who was up in the bowl today. said it was good because of the altitude. seems like 11K and up is fine and soft.

Don't know about that....maybe on lower, S aspects, but it's too high/cold to corn up just yet, plus, we've only been in high pressure for about 3-4 days now.

I'll get out tomorrow for a few hours and report back.

Does anyone know which venue(s) they'll be using for the comps next weekend? Burn or Hanging Valley, or depends on conditions maybe? I was contemplating doing the Saturday comp if I can empty the sand from my panties in time.

Jeez girl, if you go I would be kicking myself for not going. It would be cool to have a friend to compete with.

I'm guessing the conditions will be as good as is possible ion one of these things.

Wasup high today in breck and it was firm, but carveable on the aspects that are out of the sun, and firm and fast on those that were.

though they are calling for some snow tonight and tomorrow to freshen up things a little, and the temps are staying only a degree or two above freezing.

Do it! If you ski half as good as your brothers, you will do just fine in the comp.

You and Mir could represent the maggette contingent too. Anyone know if Jane is skiing in the comp?

Thanks for the info. Its great to get some kind of idea of whats out there. We have four days before the comp and we can go just about any where. So we are assessing for the best snow around we might even go to Jackson if need be, maybe Canada?

I was out in Vail Today and it was rather crisp with some slight wind. The recent warm weather created some interesting conditions.

What do you mean by "interesting"? This does not sound good.

The snow is going to be punchy/funky up high and pretty firm down low where it is more skier compacted and skied off in both of the venues. This could all change if the Wed/Thurs snow in the forecast actually shapes up. I will ski the venues tomorrow and give an update.

Also, I have heard that Friday will be on the Headwall and will be a qualifier of sorts for Saturday in the Burn Cliffs. Sunday is a weather day.

I've been told the same... but the thing I'm confused about is how can Friday be a qualifier round when you can register to compete on just Saturday? I was assuming Friday and Saturday were being treated almost as 2 separate comps, just being run the same weekend. I haven't registered myself, but I'm contemplating Saturday if it starts looking like snow, and looking at the registration page it doesn't appear that you need to qualify for Saturday.

I was a little confused about this too, and when I registerd the dude told me that each day was an individual event. I don't think it makes sense to have two back to back, one day events anyway, but who knows. I was gonna do both, in spite of snow conditions. It does kinda take the fun out of it if it's total hardpack though.

Yeah, I'll see ya there Telek

PS- Let's let that other thread die, one thread is enough if people want to comunicate about this?

Got some clarification today... Friday and Saturday are being treated as two seperate days of competition. As noted before, Friday is supposed to be on the Haging Valley Headwall and Saturday should be in the Burn Cliffs. Burn Cliffs is the more technical of the two venues, but also tends to hold the better snow.

As of right now, the snow in both venues is far from ideal. Fast windbuff up high on the headwall and even faster hardpack/packed powder down low. There is punchy/funky snow up high in the burn cliffs where there hasn't been any traffic and hardpack/packed powder bumps down low where the lower traverses allow much more traffic. However, both venues do benefit from significant windloading, even after the smallest of storms. Conditions on Friday and Saturday will really be determined by what we eek out of this Wednesday's and Thursdays' storms. As of right now, not much is forecasted... but a little goes a long way.

It is worth noting that the Burn Cliff venue is judged from a considerable distance, and as such will most likely not be used if any poor weather is present.

The following pictures are all of the Burn Cliff venue. They are stolen from various other threads. Credit on the first four goes to Vicious, while the last one (pretty pink lines and all) is from Raddam.

The following pics, also stolen from another thread, are of the Headwall venue. All pics are from Raddam. This venue is a bit of a one hit wonder if you go for the cliff in the second picture, which is on skiers left of the venue and right of the first picture.

Hope this helps those who had questions... and thanks in advance to Raddam and Vicious who don't know that I am linking their pictures from other threads. Just thought it wouldn't hurt to consolidate some of this info.
