Fucking weird shit man. I flew in Friday, took my time to aclimatise Sat and Sunday, progresively hiking and skiing more etc. I felt great up untill I went to sleep Tuesday night. No headachs, no signs of AMS etc. In short it was the best that I had ever felt at altitude. Woke up Wed morning fealing like shit, felt like I had the flue. I was puking, had a feaver and basically thought that the slight cold that I had when I arrived was turning out to be the flue. Took it easy stayed in bed all day, drank a shit load of water. Wed night, awoked multiple times coughing up some frothy red shit. Thought that I was just coughing up a lot of mucus as a result of the cold, and thought that the redness was due to the gator aid that I was drinking.Originally Posted by SheRa
I awoke thurday morning, with no nausinous, no headach, but I was still coughing upe red mucus shit, and both of my feet and hands felt like they where numb with a slight tingling sensation. At this point I was thinking that something was seriously fucked up, so I checked my self into the clinic. After the standard blood pressure test, blood oxygen level test (resluted in being at 79%), listening to my lungs they decided to give me some oxygen. After a bit of oxygen, I was slightly improved in 15~30 miniutes. They than increased the oxygen levels, let me rest for a while, than gave me some chest X-rays which resulted in the HAPE diagnosis. In short my lungs where almost 2/3rds filled with mucus and blood that was seeping in due to an expanded pulmanary artery.
They than gave me some treatments to expand my lungs again, a pill, wich I dont remember the name off and more oxygen. After 4 hours of more oxygen they gave me the choice of staying in the hospital, or returning to the condo with oxygen support, and in inhailer until I left this morning for denver. Driving to denver nearly kicked my ass going over Berthoud, but once in Denver I felt significantly improved. Once we arrived back in seattle I physically felt normal, althou I feal like some one just kickedthe shit out of my lungs, and I still have lmited lung capacity, but I feall 100 times better than yesterday.
Hape is scary shit, and after having it I can see how it can easily kill, especially when in 50% of the cases there is no pre warning sings of AMS.
I still need to go to a doc to get re-checked here in bham to make shure that the shit is working its way out of my lungs, and I havent asked about it yet, but I have a fealing that the Tylenol cold and synus medicin with sudephin that I was taking for the minor cold that I had when I arrived, may have helped to triger the HAPE. Also, last year when I was at higher elevation doing more strenious exercise while actually having the flue, I didnt have any major problems with the altitude, soit just goes to show that HAPE can happen to anyone and it can happen randomely.
