    Aspect Journal in Skier

Skier magazine makes a little note on the existance of Aspect Journal in their latest issue. Not the most flattering piece, but a mention nonetheless.

    Just thought that was cool.

Sick and ashamed and happy (and probably should have posted this on the Aspect site, but time is limited and boards fall),

Any way you could quote it? No chance of seeing that mag in my world...at least not on purpose.

Heh. I heard that they included a blip and I've been meaning to snag a copy and read what they wrote, but it's tough to find a copy even here in Seattle. If you can post it, that would be great, gin. Any press is good press, as they say.

    Okay, here it is:

"From birdcage liner to cyber junk, get ready for the a new "literary ski website." By the time this magazine hits newsstands, Aspect Journal (aspectjournal.com) will feature stories by anyone who wants to post them. To those who do, good luck finding an erudite synonym for stoked. The site is free, whether you're submitting (you're paid nothing) or viewing (it costs nothing). Expect good things from those never employed by a ski magazine and pedestrian navel-gazing from the likes of us..."

I find the tone somewhat condescending, but, then again, that could be said about their entire magazine. I get a bit tired of the "rah-rah-Canada, we are hosers, we like weed and beer" attitude they portray. And their writing ain't even close to all that.

    But anyhow, there it is.

Sick and ashamed and happy (and nothing (I mean nothing) touches the Powder of days gone by),

I'll be damned if they don't feel threatened. It's like they are trying to claim that writing by non-professional jouranlists is somehow automatically of a lesser calibre than that of some 20K a year ski rag hack. Spare me the elitism and welcome to the dawn of a new era in erudite synonism.

    AJ rock on!

agreed, and slightly misinformed as well IMO. Especially the part about "those never employed by a ski magazine" when there's stories on there by established authors who've been published in before in Powder, Ski Press World, etc. etc. Guess they've never heard of Andy Dappen before or seen PK's name on Powder's masthead....

Can't find skier's website...do they even have one. I'd love to send the editor a little parting shot. Gin, is there an email for letters to the editor in the rag?

Yup, I rolled my eyes at that as well. Also, the featuring "stories by anyone who wants to post them" is perhaps misleading. My understanding is that there is an editorial board for the site content and I would guess that they don't accept everything (though they did "publish" mine...). Perhaps they were referring to the message board...?

Sick and ashamed and happy (and, like Schmear said, any press is good press and hopefully some folks will use the provided address),

Thanks gin. My guess is that blurb was written before the site actually launched. When we first sent out a release to promote the idea of the site, I received similar comments from others who felt the site would be amateur and for 'English majors who haven't written in years.' Post-launch, the comments have been quite different.

It's no biggie. Hopefully the site will prove itself now that it actually exists. People are entitled to their opinions. The issue of not paying writers for submissions is certainly a major roadblock we'll have to address some day soon. "Professional" writers have a problem with not getting paid, and as one of those myself, I certainly understand the point. But we're just not able to do that right now. And when you announce yourself as a "literary journal," as we have, you're bound to get critics.

Send letters if you like, but I happen to know for certain that the editor of Skier likes AJ--now that he's seen it.
