Huh. Did you read my latest post here, or is this some funky coincidence?
In any case, if novellas count, I'll stick with:
Stand by Me
The Shawshank Redemption
and I'll put in Fight Club cause skiingbear reminded me that it was indeed a book.
Sick and ashamed and happy (and can't help feeling that there's a big one I'm missing),

Shawshank was what popped into my head first as well. I didn't think about Stand by Me but that deserves an honorable mention. Staying with Steven King I would put the Green Mile up there as well. After that it's a tough call.Originally Posted by gincognito

#1 Shawshank
#2 Band of Brothers (not exactly a movie)
#3 Master and Commander (eagerly anticipating the rest)
people have already mentioned LOTR, it's good too.
I'm hoping The Chronicles of Narnia improves, right now it's not looking too good.

Shawshank
Master and Commander
The Princess Bride
gin- yes, that's where it came from.

I'll add some of my picks, although Fight Club and Green Mile were already mentioned, and I would have listed those.
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Touching the Void
Romeo + Juliet (ala DiCaprio and Danes) - I'll probably hear disagreements here, but I thought it was well done.
My vote for worst movie based on, what I believe is, a damn good book:
Starship Troopers
Read the book before you judge...damn good sci-fi.
[This Space For Rent]
the Outsiders
Watership Down
LOTR
let your tracks be lost in the dark and snow
The Godfather
To Kill A Mockingbird
Lonesome Dove
Quando paramucho mi amore de felice carathon.
Mundo paparazzi mi amore cicce verdi parasol.
Questo abrigado tantamucho que canite carousel.
After seeing Capote, I'd say a combo of it and In Cold Blood for a double bill from the same book, sort of.
And 2001 for 3.
I can't believe I forgot the Godfather!
Does Goodfella's count? That was based on a book, just not a novel.
I'm in a band. It's called "Just the Tip."
The new hitch hikers guide to the galaxy was pretty good as well.
The French Connection
One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest
The Godfather
Honorable Mention: Cider House Rules

Movies that weren't too bad from books that were great:
Dune
Alive
the naked lunch
slaughterhouse 5
/i think cosmic banditos is being filmed. will be a great movie if done right.
Apocolypse Now (Heart of Darkness)
Grapes of Wrath
Clockwork Orange
Damn, we're in a tight spot!
That was more like a movie drilling a hole into Burrough's head, much like Capote.Originally Posted by noodles

The Luzhin Defence (yes spelled that way) was an adaptation of the Nabokov story, The Defense.
Having been awhile since I read the book, I can't remember how faithfull it was.
However, John Tuturros performance in the movie is very very good.
The Rum Diary (Hunter S Thompson) is in pre-production right now, with Johnny Depp slated to play Hunter/Paul's character. Can't really put it on the list yet...but I have a feeling it will be.

Wanted to add "Apocalypse Now" based on Joseph Conrad's "Heart of Darkness" and "Blade Runner" based on "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" by Philip K. Dick.
Trainspotting
Sin City
Virgin Suicides

Aritcle on just this in this week's Entertainment Weekly; which, by the way, is the bible.
Good call on Trainspotting, Plake. One of the all-time greats.
I'm glad no one has said High Fidelity yet, cuz I thought the movie stunk--and, yeah, I know I'm in the minority here...
One I've heard they're doing a movie of that really worries me is A Confederacy of Dunces. It's really difficult to imagine anyone doing justice to that book.
