how to cope with missing part of a season

    hey everyone,
first off, i gotta say i feel lucky i only broke my arm. when reading through the threads on this site, and everyone talking about their blown out knees, i feel really lucky i've never had a serious knee injury.
however, i sutdied a lot lately, took 6 exams and finally the last one on jan 31. from feb1 i have 6 weeks of semester break that i planned to go skiing everyday. so on feb 1 i slide some stupid boxes, as there's no freshies, get one of my skis caught while preparing to jump back off of it, and totally crash down hard. i fractured my right humerus at the tuberculum majus (not sure what it's called in english, but it's some bone structure where the muscles for out/rearward rotation are attached to).
no skiing for 6 weeks. all of the semester break, the best part of the season. i'll probably ski again in 4 weeks, but still i feel i'm missing the best part of winter.
what do you guys suggest to cope with it? i'm so incredibly pissed i can't ski right now i don't know what to do? any suggestions from someone with inury experience?
sorry for the rant, i just feel really miserable. skiing means everything to me.

Hey dude, I broke my Humerus right in the shoulder joint (dealt with rotation also) about a year and a half ago. It's a pretty lame bone to break, and even though you'll be feeling some cabin fever for the next while, you're going to want to move your arm earlier than you should, but DON'T do it! I made the mistake of mtn biking again about 4 weeks after the break, as well as taking off the sling a week early, and it just caused my healing time to increase. When the time comes, message me and I can tell you some really good stretches once you're allowed to move it, but you should also hit up some physio so they can massage all the muscles that have tightened around your shoulder during healing time. Mine still bugs me sometimes, like when I play tennis and it almost feels loose when I'm running, and I totally regret not giving it the full time to heal.

In the meantime... learn to knit.
    Believe.

    I second this motion.

Also, just focus on the fact that while it may suck to miss these few weeks of skiing that in the long run you'll make a complete recovery and will likely ski many more happy, healthy seasons.

How many oxycodones does it take?

everyone remember back to their days of wisdom and would get stupid high. Well just see how many it takes to have the most F'd up dreams youve had in a long time. Or smoke alot of pot. I had surgery on thursday for my acl and mcl. Still off my rocker over here.

well, thanks for all your suggestions.
too bad i broke up w/ my gf 2 months ago (otoh, she's a skier and would be out skiing while i'm sitting at home...)
i will get to go skiing again in 2 weeks, even though i'll have to take it easy and not crash. i just don't know yet whether i should ski w/ poles and risk some stress on that arm from the pole (plants), or if i should ski w/o poles (at least for a couple of days) so i won't get my arm caught, but suffer from decreased balance (or at least feel strange (my skiing w/o poles isn't that bad since i practiced that a bit to work on my technique))
3 days after the accident i went running again, it felt strange and i wasn't really relaxed (which lead to some major muscle ache), but it worked.
and i havn't gotten high, as all i got was ibuprofen to reduce the swelling inside my arm where the bone bled into the surrounding muscle tissue.
the season's still pretty long, and i will (hopefully) still ski 75-80 days this season overall, so it's not too bad i guess.
but still it sucks, especially if it's caused by stupidity (like sliding boxes..)
    thanks again though!
btw: i live in germany, so at least i don't have to brew my own beer. there's enough good beer in the stores. and gas stations..
