What's a good age to teach a kid?

What's a good age to teach a kid how to surf? My kid is 7 and wants to surf but do they make boards that small? I could give her my old 6'2" but I don't think that her arms would be long enough to paddle it.
People should learn endurance; they should learn to endure the discomforts of heat and cold, hunger and thirst; they should learn to be patient when receiving abuse and scorn; for it is the practice of endurance that quenches the fire of worldly passions which is burning up their bodies.

As soon as they can swim. Start them on a soft top. They are safe and gives the kids confidence. Once they master that they can ride anything!

I suggest starting them earlier than 25. What was I thinking? I grew up in a surf town for crying out loud!
Putting the "core" in corporate, one turn at a time.

    Yes. You suck.

Back to topic- the earlier the better. At a minimum get them started trying to stand up while you paddle them into or push them into waves. The later the harder it will be. I would say 7 is definately not too early

Cool this will be good news for her. But now she'll want a wet suit, shit I want a wet suit.

Seeing the subject, I thought I'd be the wiseass to chime in that while 23 isn't too late, a kid could start a lot earlier with the right connections.

Tuckerman, you're another NNE guy, right? Summer's a fine time to start surfing here (I'm in Maine) and my first year I regularly went without a wetsuit into early December, but that's kind of like learning to telemark on leather boots and three-pins -- you'll learn something, but proper equipment will make everything easier.

My 14 year-old cousin did great during a week-long visit this summer (duh). My 6 year-old cousin had a great time, but could neither paddle effectively on my boards (narrowest is 22.5") nor stand up. Still, she went home to Utah and spread the stoke because now she's a surfer. Her bro (obviously not a skier) says he's leaving Utah for a coast as soon as he can get to college.
