    altitude question

After spending 8 days at the ocean I finally made it back into the mountains. 6 hours of skinning and skiing, almost 5000 vert and my quads are hammered.

I've never felt them like this before. Even during the day, they felt tingly, weak, and out of flow. Throughout the day I was feeling a bit light headed.

the question is, can one week really make that much of a difference? And can you lose a shitload of red blodd cells that quickly?

I thought I was in shape but now I feel so lame...relatively speaking of course

I read here on the board a while ago that it only takes seven days at sea level to lose all of your altitude acclimitation. Don't know if it's a fact, but....

    Stoy,

Yeah, 8 days will take it out of you. But your body will pump it back sooner than you think.

On a side note, we skied 8+k of perfect pow today. I felt pretty good, you would have too.

I noticed a difference a few weeks ago after a 48 hour trip to sea level. couldn't believe it. huffing and puffing from making lift-served tele turns. back to normal a couple days later.

I've heard that it supossedly takes about a month to fully aclimatize, but I'm not sure how long it takes to lose it, or oh much damage can be done within a few days.

    stoy, yes.

85% of acclimitization in first 4 days or so, 90% after seven, takes weeks to hit 100%.

    Give or take.

From a guy whose one and only claim to fame is to have been above 20k. Not really all that, but it's interesting nonetheless. Plus, I look like Peter Brady or Oscar De La Hoya depending on the viewer, and get bikini models in Bend to talk to me on Tuesdays such as today.

P.S. Mildly drunk, but answer remains. Yes. 4 Days+ is enough to make a difference, 7 definitely yes.

Absolutely agree. If I don't ski twice per week minimum I can feel the difference when I try to ski a full day.
You think that experience felt bad, just wait 'til you get a load of what twenty years older feels like.
