If you're going to poach aim higher- Upper traverse has been shweet and fast- pro-patrollers who just want to ski have been putting it in.

That Elevator gate poach pisses me off too (esp. when we're forced to do it in primo conditions, or poach timing is off on upper trails).

Skied Stokes to Ghost Bowl sunday down to Annie, but Black hole was calling- and I hadn't looked up the crease yet. As always, looks way better going in than coming out. Still a bit of a hole on the low landing shelf- manditory air but seen it worse.

Dragons Lair: Get to Piss Pass, look at the Cleaver, then CLIMB up it. Not doable in a low snow year without ropes but in fine shape this year. The Lair is straight over the top- and is hairball. Narrow with rock on either side.

Denny creek is a no go- lots of snow above 3000ft but drops off sharply below the pass. Would be a long bushwack out.

Don't know what's up with the patrol this year, they refuse to open the full BC even when it's stabilized. I usually get a "But we opened up Elevator for you" as they are lapping out again.

We have poached the low traverse to Knoll 4 while they are on the high traverse without getting a word- most of them are anxious to get all the way out and don't want to drop down off the trail.

(PS. This is in no way an endorsement to blatantly disregard ropelines. People die at Alpy every year doing that. Carry the kit and know where the safety line is.)

Before Booth Creek bought the area and brought on manditory drug testing, the old school patrollers used to smoke ALOT of pot.

Some of those lines are named after the people - Sweet Lil Annie, Brownie Bowl etc.

Seriously though what is going on at alpy,
I really would rather not poach, but I have been more than ever,

the worst was a Saturday two weeks ago, on Sat nothing was opened it was super crowded, Sunday however the opened elevator even thought the temps went way up and more stuff was sliding.. I just think they were afraid all of the hordes on sat would venture out. why not just put a ski patrol guy at the gates and have him check for equipment.

I agree. Talked to patrol on Sunday- only reason they didn't open upper/lower was due to the impending "temp spike" with the hangfire. They anticipate having to do some cornice runs this week to bomb above the upper T.

Personally, I think they could have kept Upper/Lower open until at least 12pm before the temps were forecast to increase. I think they are also feeling gun-shy with the pure amount of lemmings up there (like that C2 loading mess with peeps getting ski tips caught and falling off chairs).

Perhaps the exit points could have a gate that opens when it recognizes a beacon signal? Or I agree above- have Patrol stationed out at the Upper/Lower T checking for gear to keep the lemmings out. Something needs to be done, that's for sure. I'm not into poaching, but it seems like it's necessary this year (conditions permitting)

Sorry guys. I don't think that'll ever happen. The BC status at Alpental hasn't changed in 10yrs. For a time you could walk into the shack at the top and ask-got beacon, shovel, group 3-4 and you'd get an okay, check back in on the next cycle.

Some of us tried an email / letter campaign a few years back to get it converted to a Baker-like BC but it was a dead end.

I was standing there this Sunday as they came through to the U.T., and ask about opening (usuall response is well, we need to check it out again), or hey at least let me tag on. I was told to go to Elevator gate. I said they were making me a bad person- and patroller X said "there are a lot of bad people" and skied away up the U.T. trail.

Ergo I choose to poach. Be quiet, be quick, and try to wipe the grin off before loading the chair.

THAT GUY, (heh, yeah, "that guy") was, well yeah . There sure were some funny ass moments in the lineup. He received a heckling of Royal proportions.

One of these days I gotta hook up with some of you 'old pros' at Alpy. I'm still breaking in my old 'Bird wings from ooootah and getting to know the area.
'03-'04 was a great, but- then there was last year....but we won't talk about that! can't wait for the weekend. Hopefully gonna head up at night this week if these storms produce.

Too bad that didn't work, I'd be game to try again. At least it would be an attempt to cut down on the lemmings if patrol caught people skiing w/o gear or partners in the BC. But my guess is they'd rather not deal with it, so why change it?

annie and her hubby are some of the best to ever grace denny mtn
had them break trail out to piss pass, not stop, rip stokes ,and hubby still prodin annie to hurry up

now that the worlds bigest dipshit aka jon barker is out as patrol director, things should be reverting back to the old way of the bro dont ask~ dont tell
as long as you dont ski onto a group of trollers u r ok
    check at the shack
    be stealth
count the skis out front ...figure out where they are
the only way they can ever usually nail peeps is when u ski out so always take the source lake trail out and if hassled claim u were touring up the valley floor and back out

we used to listen to all patrol radio transmissions on a scanner programed with the radio freq. they use....keep that in your pack all day and u can poach the shit out of alpy

    do it

    thats what its there for

    www.freealpental.org

    dragons lair is sick
    ive only ridden it twice
last time was way back in 99 during the BIG year

drop that then ski slightly skiers left while decending till you hit the gnarly little chute that drops in high into the top of ghost bowl..the chutes shaped like an upside down v lots of times its a mandatory air in...not many peeps ski it but it is visible while traversing around to the top of ghost proper

if you havent dropped shot 8 backside to the old cop shop~you havent lived
probably the sickest old growth tree run off 1/90

Whenever my Dad (now in his 60's) comes out skiing he's always trying to get us to do the road run from the bomb shack to the freeway.Mostly because he's lazy and dosen't like huffing out the U.T. Over 1600 vert to a coordinated pickup (damn those cell phones).

Jon Barker RIP. Not a pleasant man to ski into in the BC.

That's been done. Two of my buddies (some of the best snowboarders on the hill) came up a few yrs ago in all white Tyvek one piece suits. Friggin hilarious. Everyone was asking who their sponsor was.
