    quick REI return q?

I've got a pair of Nordicas I bought from them last year and they've been giving me some shin pain. I bought a new pair of Head boots with a taller cuff, so I want to return the old ones to them. If I don't have my receipt, how do they know how much to give me back? Do they log that stuff in my member account or will they just credit me for the last [lowest] price they sold them at?

Take them back to Nordstrom. They'll accept anything. Then try Costco after that.

I'm sure their return policy will change sooner or later do to excessive abuse.

Doubtful. The liberal return policy is financed by people who buy $300 dollar sleeping bags and use them once.

A buddy of mine bought a kayak paddle from REI back in like 1997 or so. He broke it twice that summer. Got a new one each time with no questions asked. Broke it again in each of the next two summers and got a new one each time. At some point he bent the paddle and wasn't near an REI so he bought another paddle. A year later he took it back and got store credit.
