...resize an image for certain filesize or dimension constraint, using the standard mac photo software - such as iPhoto? Specifically, I'd like to know how to make an image 100KB or less, or make it 100x100 pixels or less? I only have iPhoto, no photoshop or other goodies - just the standard stuff.
Hoping to be able to post a TR of a trip I made recently...but I want to host my images here...
You can do it with iPhoto when exporting a photo, I believe you can even do it in batch jobs with automator. I'll have to look at it when I get home I can't walk you throgh it off the top of my head.
You can use iPhoto but it's not very efficient. Go to Share > Export
Under File Export you can set the size of the saved image. Unfortunately, you can't set the jpeg compression quality (what's up with that Apple??). So, for a 640X480 image it comes out around 200K+. You have to save it at 320X240 to get it under 100K.
Open it up w/ Preview, go to file/export and select the format and click options. You can set a target file size or select quality... I have no idea, of course, on how well or efficient or whatever it is...but it'll do it.
Open it in iPhoto, go to File, Export and opt to "Scale Image To". You can do multiple images this way (I usually export to the desktop unless I'm uploading them to Shutterfly). If you do multiples, they retain their original name. If you do one at a time, you can rename them.
that export and "scale image to" works great but i have lots of high res images that wind up real small by the time i scale them down to a size that is less than 100kb. any suggestions that would work with iPhoto or something else on Tiger?
Just ace the quality a bit when doing a "save as" with preview. If you have photoshop you can be a little more exacting with it. I don't think iPhoto will do it easily, though I haven't used iPhoto much.
I think you're trying to reduce file size without reducing the resolution....which will only work if you make the image tiny. 72 dpi is usually fine for anything that will only be viewed on a computer.
...I'm sure you could find some freeware on versiontracker.com that will do it too....
