    Do you Like...Speed?

I skied with someone last week who didn't like speed much.

Not afraid of it, he just likes to ski slower and work on technical stuff.
That's probably a good idea now and then, but it's always with him.

Sometimes I like to ski moguls slowly, so that it feels like you're on rolling waves, not just smashing lumps of snow. But in almost every other (safe) situation I like pretty high speed, grande vitesse, alta velocità, whatever you want to call it...

Do you ever ski slowly? Or slower than you can, given the situation?

I know someone like that, who only works on technical aspects of a perfect turn, very "epic". I do think he is afraid of speed though so it works perfect for him.

I prefer to ski fast to very fast, most of the time, I get a lot of rush out of it. Maybe that is why I bought a pair of DH skis and I live in the midwest.

Anyway, now that my 4 yr old is skiing alot with me, i have to slow down, which i have found to be useful, because I never really skied slowly. I feel like I have learned something skiing slower than my normal mach looney.

When i go skiing with my old man I go slow and work on ski instructor turns. Its fun to slow things way down and work on being really smooth.
Otherwise, i usually go as fast as i can.

Big moguls slow me down, so I don't like big moguls!

I'm being forced to do this right now. Getting my level 1 in two weeks. It feels sooooo weird to ski the way they want. There are two ways to get your skis on edge, according to my PSIA book - banking and angulation. When I ski groomers, I mostly just bank. I like it because it feels good and it's fun. But I have to angulate for the examiners. I feel pretty retarded getting all radical like on a groomer, but that's what they want...

I tend to ski faster than the people I normally ski with. I like the feeling of leaning into a turn and then the pop out especially when the pitch of the hill changes.

The only time I like to ski slower is when I am trying to milk powder and vert. Hiking Highlands bowl for 4 turns is fun, but after a few laps of that you sometimes want just a nice long run.

I'm a huge puss when it comes to putting the hammer down, especially on super packed slippery groomers, so I try to keep my posse in the steeps when I can work on "technical lines." When I do mach, thoughts of things like no health insurance and kinetic energy pop into my mind.

I ski slowly when those 'high traffic area' mountain hosts are waiting with their walkie talkies to chase me down en route to the base so they can take my pass.

Wuss. Big mountain gaper dodging is the progression of the sport yo. I hit those slow zones switch and ride 'em to the road.

When you finally get used to it I think you'll like it on the groomers. Grab a pair of slalom skis, load them up on a turn and then hip check. Your ski's will shoot right over your head. Its one of the most bizarre things.

It's all relative. Who's to say what is fast and what is slow. Just stay in control.

my favorite place where speed is your friend is rails. the momentum helps with stability (as long as your keep your weight forward), and the less time you're on the railing, the less time you have to lose your balance and crush your jewels.

I spent about half my days this season looking for BlurredElevens, phish, and Z 1500 feet dowhill from me about .02 seconds after we got off the lift. They gave me the speed fever. But they'll also tell you i can't ski for shit in what I call technical stuff (Prima cornice is sadly about as technical as I have gotten), tight trees, big uneven moguls, or switch. My sucking makes me feel bad for those who have waited on me.

Working on skiing fast through ANYTHING is a big goal for next season.

But yes, I slow down on groomers only when patrol tells me to. However, none of them have ever told me--as some park rangers told my friend on his boat--that I use excessive amounts of speed...

Edit: the phrase "speed is always your friend" is bullshit. It took breaking my neck to figure that out. In most situations this is true (dropping something big, sliding a rail, racing sluff), but this is not the case hitting tables. APPROPRIATE speed is your friend in the park.
