    being a lifty...

Has been pretty good so far. Since i moved up to xtal in mid december i have only missed 2 days of skiing. Since there is no new snow expected in the next couple of days I finally decided to come back home for my days off so i can utilize such great inventions as the interweb and cable tv.
Havent got to do any skiing with maggots yet, though I did run into the AD at the bottom of green valley a couple weeks ago. I get Tue-Wed and spend the entire day in north or southback if they are open, i usually ski with a group of really good boarders, but it would be nice to find some fellow twoplankers to rip with. The nightlife aint so hot for a 20 yr old up there, but i manage to get by on a steady diet of snow cap, PBR and uhhh, tobacco. Well, time to go get drunk cuz its my friday, feel free to holla change for a nickel if you see me workin, im the lifty with a busted ass lip and a silver k2 helmet, i usually work forest queen on the weekends and either green valley or high cambell during weekdays.

    I'd bet you've seen me...

...fat guy in full cammies, black helmet, smith goggs...z-bend poles...

usually the giveaway is the camo, but plenty of army fucks are doing the same thing too. I don't blame them, I just always call them fuckers...

I don't know about that. I've never worked at 7-11 but I'll bet they don't have to look at smiling happy snow covered shreaders on a powder day.

its not so bad on pow days as long as I am working chair 3 or 6 and there are 2 people at the bottom so we can alternate laps all day long, and I never have to wait in a lift line either. A good example was on saturday when i got 12 laps in on high cambell throughout the day, not too shabby considering im getting paid while all the gapers were dropping 50 bucks to wait in huge lines.

I would be up on Wend w/ Jumper.....

But I currently have a kidney infection and having been pissing blood...vomiting...feeling like I'm being constantly punched in my back...you know. Lots of fun things.

Hopefully I'll be able to ski Sat or Sun. Not sure yet.....

Gabe is easy to spot, though he often disappears into one of the many holes on that mountain.

    Glad to hear it.
I'm working at a rental shop right now, which is also working out pretty damn good. I get to ski every day for a few hours in the middle of the day, and since I work at Buttermilk (a flat mountain for those of you who don't know) it
is actually less busy on powder days, which means I can take off and head to another mountain. Free pass doesn't hurt either. Life is good.

I feel guilty skiiing into the deep temerity lift on a powder day and the liftie says "hows it going?" I mean, what am I supposed to say, "crappy man, its just awful"? I'm sure they'll live though.

Hey, I resemble that remark Well, the $50 part. So far I haven't been up on a busy day this season. OTOH, I haven't been up on a really great day, either.

I remembered meeting crstlextrm briefly at the Utah mini last year and when I saw him working the Green Valley lift something clicked in my head that he was working at Crystal this year.

The secret to having a happy & productive lift crew is 3-4 workers per lift. 1 checking tix I working the gaper queue, 1 bumping chairs, 1 riding up to kick the top guy/gal for a run. Eat your lunch while waiting your bump from the top, everyone do equal parts of the shoveling and ramp work. And you can ski as much as any day pass holder could stand.

The secret to a shitty & surly lift crew... 2 workers per lift, no ski breaks.

That's not really possible. Lifties are LOW on the ski resort sexual totem pole. Very low. If you bring your girl with you from where ever you came, you'll get steady sex for the first 2-3 weeks after you arrive - until she wises up, and you give up your turn with her.

Otherwise, you only get play during the ski season 2-3 times if you're lucky, and only if you're either Smoov B, or a circa 1984 Don Johnson look-alike.

Nah... we just didn't know any better. Lifties are always either ignorant first seasoners or guys (rarely girls) who really aren't that into skiing or boarding. Also, the only reason I became a liftie was because we were able to rotate out for some runs every day. I never once missed a powder day during my season. Mind you, I only got between 3 and 5 runs in a day while "working," but I never missed a powder day...

naw, I wasnt tricked into any job, in fact i was very stoked to be getting a 5 dollar season pass and on mountain housing for 150 a month. I may not get to ski all day long if I am workin on a pow day, but i usually get somewhere between 5-10 runs in, 2 of which come before we even let public on the mountain. I almost took a job as a dishwasher in the new Cambell Basin restaurant, but im glad i didnt because those poor fucks rarely get a ride break and frequently get called in on their days off.

Ubersheist and bunion know whats up. Sure being a lifty isnt the best job on the mountain, but it isnt the worst. I may only make 8 bucks an hour and i might eat top ramen and easymac on a daily basis, but when i am sitting at the top of high cambell on a bluebird day looking out at mt rainier, mt hood, mt adams, mt st helens and countless other peaks while listening to my favorite tunes I am happy, which is really the only thing that matters to me.

crstlextrm - Thanks for bumping chairs on 6 yesterday. Good to see that you were getting your share of laps in!
