    Doc says sprained MCL

Yesterday I was diagnosed with a grade 1 MCL sprain at Squaw. When I first fell on the mountain, it was really painful and surprising - I heard something, but it wasn't a definite pop. (However, I thought for sure it was something worse that what the docs said). But then the knee started to feel slightly better right away. They did the ACL tests at the clinic, and said it appeared completely intact and just fine. Since I'm only experiencing pain on the inner part of my right knee, and I'm able to bend it slightly past 90 degrees with some pain, AND I'm able to stand on one foot well enough on the bad leg.....I'm thinking their diagnosis is correct.

However, just in case (and reading what happened to Kellie), I'm going to make an appointment with an Orthopedic doctor. I already have a referral on who to see from Legoskier, so no worries there.

I guess the only thing I can do now is wait and see.....at what point do they say a patient should get an MRI? Can I ask for one? I just don't want to take any chances, and with the summit 6 weeks away, I want to be able to ski. Oh, and by the way - the search function doesn't let me search for MCL because it's too short.....

I didn't believe my GP and asked for an MRI. He (actually his nurse) said no problem. Hit the PT and you'll be good to go for the summit.

Good luck and sorry you're injured.

Good news - it's only a grade 1 MCL sprain!! Hooray - I'm still going to the summit! Doc says all I need is PT and I should be good to go!

    Thanks guys and Kellie!

I went to PT yesterday and did a few of the exercises, and today my knee is really sore and achy. It's not painful - just really, really achy.

    Is this normal?

YES, it will eventually go away! Might take awhile.

    Great news!!

I had the same thing happen to me that you described (when I came beatering out of Heart Chute )...heard 'something' in there, maybe not a pop, but something, and it hurt, and swelled, and all that crap....and luckily it was only my MCL. 4-6 weeks later of bike riding and I was 100%

Hey was that the same time you hucked heart chute while being filmed on Maggotwood?

Well I did more exercises yesterday at the gym - and I did the bike for about 20 minutes total. I didn't even finish the prescribed exercises my PT doc gave me, because there were a lot of them - but mostly because my knee started to feel a little overworked. This morning - it's super achy - but I believe it's a good kind of achy! Good advice ctarm.....I'm going to get on it and not do the bike today, but do all the exercises this time and compare how it feels tomorrow.

I have a question. I was cleared from PT a week ago, and I have one doctor's appointment left. In the last week, I've only been to the gym twice, because I've been super busy with work. Today, my knee/MCL is super achy, compared to when I was working it out more the week prior. I plan on hitting the gym every day for the next 4 days. But is the reason it's super achy because I haven't been working it out? I assume so.....I just need some reassurance.

Some of the achyness could be from inactivity.

Try some heat heat pack, hot tub, warm bath, on occasion now that the injury is no longer acute. The heat will help with increasing blood flow which reduces pain along with brining 02 rich blood to the area to help with healing.
