I'm off to Hawaii for 10 days tomorrow morning and wanted a little kick in the balls before i go. 4 feet of new and the top just opened yesterday, must have been epic!! Any reports? balls?

Here's a kick in the nuts:
Friday was snowing sideways at the top of Lincoln, which meant tracks filling in nicely. I got there about 11:30 a.m., and there was still a lot of good stuff to be had. Ran into some stomach problems, so I didn't get to rip it to the fullest.
Saturday was bluebird, and yes they did open the top - but only for about 20 cars. Something about a bad motor. The cars just hung out there all day. Some people took to hiking up from 23, but the Noids were good enough that I didn't think hiking was all that great of an idea. Found some goods in the trees off of 8, then met up with Armchair and headed out to 9. Two words: Thigh Deep - and then some. We got two good runs in before they closed the chair. Armchair was going to be up there today (Sunday), I had to come back.
Of note: since the upper gondola was basically not open all day Saturday, the chutes above Dragon's Back were completely untouched at closing on Saturday. Don't know if Armchair got it today, but it looked sicko.
Thanks, I needed that. Sounds pretty damn sweet, can't wait to hit Mammy when i get back. You hit Tom's Ridge or Hemlock? I bet today just went off up top with all the closures, f**k i wish i was there!!!
Take some pow turns for me...
This probably my last Mammoth TR (for a while). I almost didn’t go. Xmas holiday weekend, and 3 feet of new snow. Not a room available anywhere in town. I’m thinking it’s going to be zany packed with every idiot South of Santa Barbara who ever thought to try snowboarding.
I got a room in Bishop Friday night and headed up to the hill early Sat morn. There was a bit of ice and snow on the 395 at Sherwin summit, so everyone is chaining up so they can drive 35 mph on the dry road for the next 25 miles.
On the way up the access road, it looks like the wind wasn’t too strong.

In the lot I found out the top hadn’t opened Friday. Might be pretty good. Coin toss took me over to 23 and there was nice thigh deep turns on drop 3. Coupla laps of the wipes and drops are really sweet. Upper gondy didn’t run all day. Bad motor. So I stayed on 23 and backside. The trees under 14 were nice.

Took a walk out on hemlock around lunch time and scored some freshies.

Crowds were very light. Mostly families sticking to the lower groomers.
Ran into Ductape around 2 in the afternoon. We were both heading over to chair 9 to see what was left on Dragon’s Tail. Nice thigh deep stuff in the trees.

Sunday was cold and starting to cloud up. They got the upper gondy working, so pretty much everything East of Cornice was fresh. A few people had hiked to Dave’s on Sat, but there was lots of fresh available. Huevos is filling in and you can get through with a puckery straightline if you don’t have the true huevos to air it (like bullet). My bases were in bad shape, so I took my skis into Footloose Sat night. Six base welds, a sixer of fosters and 80 bones later, all was well. After about 120 days on my FaGS, I finally cracked an edge on the rocks in huevos yesterday. wah.
Looking back up into huevos

Storm is brewing in the West and the wind was really starting to crank in the afternoon. Most of the top was getting choppy and almost starting to bump up, but the wind was blowing snow into the trenches and pounding down the bumps. By 2pm Monument was almost buffed smooth again.
I ended the day making a couple of laps out to the Tail and skiing the steep, powdery trees alone and in utter silence.

On my way home I stopped by Galen Rowell’s Mountain Light Gallery in Bishop and said my farewell to the Sierras.

Nice TR + pics http://tetongravity.com/ubb/icons/icon14.gif
i'm going to miss those TR's. good as always, mang.
i hope all goes well with your move ACE. you're going to try and make a showing at the summit, right?
i was up last week. snowed the 20th and 23rd. backside opened up on the 21st so there was some nice pow to be had (invented a new trick: half cab to face plant AKA the snow osterich... gotta remember to land further back on my skis landing in pow). 22nd i had to head into the trees to find any good powder, and the 23rd was just nice.
but like armchair says: there's no room in town. i had to stay in bishop as well. ahhh, days inn and dennys all week.![]()
