I'm thinking about picking this setup up for a beginner setup:
    http://www.basspro.com/servlet/catal...rTarget=browse

Thoughts? I'm gonna use it for creeks in Montana, most likely when I'm backpacking or screwing around after work, etc.

    I'm a level 1 fisherperson.

Too bad you couldn't make it down last week, The Tarpon were thick.

We had 9 hook-ups with one to the boat, which is a little better than my normal 12-1 average.

I'm having motor issues with my boat, but plan on heading down next week.

The palalo worm hatch just started this week, so the Tarpon fishing should be going nuts the next couple of weeks.

I've got 11 days in the keys and 21 around here so far this season, give me a shout when your down this way if you want to pitch some flies at them.

I fly fished for sockeye salmon on the Kenai and caught them until my arms were too tired to cast. That's a fun trip too.

If I remember correctly, its mostly short casts on the creeks around Helena (Gold creek, etc??) so that set up should work well.

It takes awhile to figure out what you like and don't like, so you can't go wrong with most beginner outfits.

Given the Drama going on with the main page, lets keep up the flyfishing stoke over here.

    Here's the stuff arounf Helena:
http://fwp.mt.gov/fishing/guide/default.aspx (Search on Helena in the near a city section)

I'm not a big lake person, although I will probably fish high alpine lakes when I'm climbing/backpacking.

I figure it's like skiing, mtn biking etc. I'm probably gonna buy something I like better within a season or two if I really get into it.

Kewl, There's nothing like a couple of high alpine lake trout and a beer for breakfast.

I don't get down that way much anymore- I gave up that part of my territory. Pretty much stop at Venice/Port Charlotte now.

The big boys are starting to show up on our coast soon. June is the month. I might be going out this weekend, not sure.

Sucks to hear about the boat. I just had my carbs rebuilt. Never run better. Let's hope yours is as easy a fix.

I'll be in Key West from June 22nd-26th. Got some wedding planning to do on Thurs. and Friday, but the weekend looks to be open for now. If you are there, we should get together. Nothing larger than a 9 wt in my quiver, though.

    don't forget the big mo.

it's pretty exciting to hook a hauser hawg on a 5wt. if you are planning on hitting the alpine lakes and little creeks then a 5wt will be fine. I think a 6 is a much more versatile Montana rod though. especially if you expect to spend much time on the missouri.

This is a fine outfit if you don't think you'll get hooked and find yourself standing in a stream every waking moment like I seem to do. I would encourage you to up-grade the rod to the St. Croix Avid series, they were blowing out last years model at Cabelas.com a few weeks ago. As for the reel, unless you tag into something spectacular it's really just a place to store line. I've fished all over Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, and Montana and can think of only a few times where I saw what my drag could do. If you were going to be chasing bigger fish, ie Steelhead, Pike, Muskie, etc then the reel becomes more important. A nice 9 foot 5wt St. Croix Avid with a reasonablly priced reel is all you need. The Avid vs the Premier is pretty clear cut, the Avid is a faster rod and one you can grow into. Depending on where you live, head over to a fly shop and cast both before you buy. Frankly you'll find the price at a fly shop to be about the same as Cabelas but I would do a little price shopping before you buy. Or if you find yourself in Northern Wisconsin, head on up to the St. Croix factory and pick up a "second" of their Legend Ultra that retails for $320 but a second is priced at the factory for $125. It's worth the drive if you find yourself close.
Lastly, spend the extra and get a four piece rod, it's much easier to backpack in and with the new technology there is no noticable loss of feel or power in a four piece.

    Good Luck,
    Jay

Just a word about reels -
I always thought they weren't important until I finally got a good one - a Ross Gunnison (~220) for my 5wt - and now I swear by a decent, sturdy reel. That is the nicest piece of gear I own. I've bashed it against rocks, and it still works like a charm.

temple forks is good rods for the $

anyone know of the equivalent of a TGR board for Flyfishers?
Check out the Drake. Pretty close to TGR for fly fishing. No monderators busting you for "strong language" etc. Pretty focused though on Montana but hey that's where we'd all like to be fishing. It can get a little more political but that comes with the cold water resource part of fly fishing.

    Good Luck,

Great set up! Now buy him the intro membership to Trout Unlimited -$17.50 for the first year. Where will he be doing most of his fishing? I'm trying to put together a couple trips to Montana/Wyoming in the next couple weeks-thinking about a Cut-Slam. If we're in the area he is more than welcome. One of the guys we'll be with is a Montana guide who now lives in Minnesota. He could get your Bro started down the right road. He and I teach classes through the local parks and is a great casting instructor. I've learned more teaching classes with him than I did in the first ten years of trying to figure out this sport.

Good Luck and Thanks for introducing another guy to the sport-as long as he doesn't show up at my favorite hole!

Are the G Loomis Trilogy rods any good? I was bidding on one on ebay, it didn't make the reserve, and the seller came back with a 2nd chance offer of $212 for a new 5 weight...

It's new, and it's a 3 piece, which is a nice compromise for me b/c it'll spend alot of time on a pack...

Hey tex don't drop that thing! Very soft aluminum and that plastic piece that holds the release mechanism for the spool is very thin plastic. I dropped mine, the plastic broke I sent it back and they repaired it but it's a fud up now. They put it back together but they didn't tighten the screws so it wore something wrong. It was a minimal impact but it was in the right spot. I think the warranty lasts for a year but I was to busy fishing. Fez is on it, head to Hauser for the combat fishing but lots of big fish.

Wierd, I was just reading this thread and then popped over to my favorite design blog and this site was featured in the gallery. http://tatteredfly.com/ Thought you guys might enjoy it. Cheers.

P.S. lots of good info here. I've been considering picking up a rod for years cause a few of my close friends are addicts. Despite growing up around lot's of fishers it never struck a cord with me. ADD?

Fall, baby, fall. When everyone's out blasting I will be chasing hogs at Hauser. Might do a bit of elk blasting myself this year. "Guns are for hunting dangerous or delicious animals" or for those who can't bow hunt. It just requires scouting time and I'm usually on the river when I should be trying to find a blasting sight away from other blasters.

Got into Anchorage Thursday afternoon and my dad promptly took us fishing down on the Russian River for some combat angling. Now, you gotta understand my dad is a fishing nut. He loves salmon and halibut fishing, and he goes almost every day after work when somethings running and stay until he get his limit. I was pretty beat from the flight and getting up at 4am, so I was thrashed. My dad got his limit of 4 in an hour or so, I got 2 and we headed back.

You gotta share with the bears on the Russian:

We went down again the next night and the wife joined us. Nothing sexier then a women in waders. Sorry for the shitty photos, the camera battery was dying and the flash didn't want to cooperate. These were taken at 12:30am:

She ended up caching 2 of these:

The next day we went down to Seward to do some sea kayaking. We stayed with some friends on there boat. I hadn't been back to Seward in at least eighteen years. My dad and I used to go down every year on the train and spend the day. Man, has it grown. We went sea kayaking the next day for our one year anniversary. It was super foggy, so no good photos, but we still had a good time. Saw some puffins.
