Use a spey rod, you can fish longer.

But you aren't flyfishing unless you've 10 false casts with your droppered nymph to the lie 20' away

This is obviously ideal....I just find myself back casting more because it takes me a few cycles to get the right line speed to give a natural presentation on the surface. Obviously due to my noobness.

Just got back from the So. Boulder creek and had two nice hard hits on dries, but couldnt set the hook. Still nice out of the water jumping action. Fucking COLD through, the water is 34-36 degrees right now and with just regular breathable waders my legs were going numb in just a few minutes.

Not directly fly ROD related, but I'm looking for reliable, relativley inexpensive, raingear for fishing.
    Requirements:
    Totally waterproof
Lightweight and manageable enough to cast without being a complete p.i.t.a.

You already have waders, so just throw on your GoreTex jacket you use for skiing. Or are you just looking to spend $$$?

Ordered a new fly rod yesterday for the lil' lady:
    http://www.sierratradingpost.com/pro...-Rod---4-Piece

Dunno if they're any good, but with a free shipping code, and using google checkout, it was $90 total, not too shabby I supose.

Since I hadnt looked at this thread since page 1, I thought I would toss this in here. TRIGGER PULLED! Ordered a new Winston 9 foot 6 weight BIIx the other day. I have the same rod in a 5 weight and it is just a little undergunned for big bugs and streamers. Now I just need to figure a name/phrase to toss on there. Seriously considering having them paint, "I am with stupid"

They arent really that much more $$$. Seems like any high end fly rod these days is $5-600. Too bad they are like skis and you need a quiver of them

I haven't made much progress emerging from my fly fishing jong status, but this coho run on the Sandy and upcoming chinook run on the Wilson here in the NW Oregon has me wanting to get some worthy gear. My only rod is a $110 WW Grigg 9' 4-pc 4/5wt, which is great for smaller trout, but it will get worked by these 30 lb salmon.

What are my options? 8wt? I really have no idea what weight line is appropriate for these big guys. I require a 4-pc too, since it has to fit in a small plane. Are the Griggs total shit? They're chinese and ridiculously inexpensive, but at the same time I can't appreciate super nice rods either with my low experience. There was a nice Redington deal a while back on STP, but it's since faded into oblivion.

Also, what's the opinion on the SAC Cloudveil Crystal Creek wader? I've seen them for $150 elsewhere too. I usually just fish in summer in my sport sandals like a bum, but when I was on the McKenzie in Sept, the water was so cold I was holding back tears. Time for waders, especially since I want one of these big fucking salmon.

PS.. somebody with rights move this thread to Fishing.

Well, the griggs is shit, but not total shit. It's just an older IM6 graphite. I think the redington is what you want. On the plus side reddington is now owned by sage and have the same "sage" warranty. On the down side, it's still IM6 graphite, but it has a higher modulus than something like the griggs. They are a bit slower in action than something like a sage/Winston, but that helps fighting bigger fish (gives you a bit of squish at the tip...) I think you could find a Redington red-fly RF2 9084 9' 8wt for about $150 if you look.

Edit: $162 without much web searching....

What ever you do with the rod, try not to skimp on the reel. You can always upgrade the rod when you aren't such a fishing jong, but a reel can't hide from a big powerful fish. Get something out of anodized Aluminum that you can also use in Salt water.....

I'd also look into the St. Croix Avid line. I have an few St. Croix rods and the Avid series is really nice. Then check out the Cabelas reels or if you can swing it go with a Ross. Orvis reels have a pretty decent price point as well now that they make them in Asia someplace.

Should I assume that the Albrights fit somewhere between Redington and Grigg on the shit-to-shine scale? The prices on the A5 ad GP rods are hard to pass up.

I already have two Okuma Magnitude ML's, which I think are..ok.
