    Solly boot issue

finishing up my trip at jackson and realize that my right boot has become unacceptably loose. Basically I can't tighten the top half of the boot enough; I think I may have packed out the liner. I have the buckles all the way tightened, and have wrenched whatever hold I can get out of the "power strap" but it is still not enough. I should have predicted this, since in the recent past I've had to tighten the buckles a little bit more (creeping up the notches slowly since last season).

The question is, what do I do about this? I can ski pow with them, but making left turns in hardpack is out of the question; ski just kind of slops around. I could use my softer skis and not the mantras since they wouldn't require as much pressure to flex them, but nobody wants that. As I see it, I have three options, in order of expense:

    1. get booster straps, hope that gives me enough pressure on my shin to control my boots
    2. get new liners. seems kind of spendy for an old boot (solly x-wave 9, i forget what year). didn't plan on major boot spending anytime soon, want to avoid it
    3. new boots. definitely can't afford this right now. plus, other than this issue, i really like my boots. they're comfortable enough to wear all day, and ski pretty well. plus i have a really hard-to-fit size and i'd rather not go through that in the near future.

anybody who skis booster straps--would they help me out? or do i have to go number 2? i'm trying to keep this as cheap as possible; trying to save money for a BC setup

Definitely try the booster strap first. I have a similar older Solly boot and it made a huge difference when I switched to a booster strap. Also, the whole buckle assembly on the upper buckles can be moved over a notch, if you haven't already done that.

and if you have, bust out the drill and make a new hole to move them further over.

Well, you have few remedies with what you can survive the rest of the season. (i did some of them last season...)

    A) Foot beds between the boot and liner.
I used some felt liners to remove some extra sloppiness in the foot area. They are nice that they dont pack out too much. And they cost about 2€s.

    B) Re-rivet the top buckles.
Got to a shop or do it your self. Rivet the "female" end of the buckles a bit further away. Just take care that they dont start to compress/crush your shin, wich is possible if you place them too far apart.

    C) Get extra shin-pieces
You can get extra shin spoilers (nordica and solly, for example) that are about 15x15cm, bended 3mm plastic, that you place inside the cuff, between the shell and liner.
You can bolt them to the cuff itself so they dont move around.

Theese are cheap/free,2nd rate customs that you can do your self. You might buy a (half a) season extra with those, but in the end,you have to get new boots.

    OR.

Get a replacment liners from intuition/raichle/sidas etc.

Costs about 50-100dollars and can make a huge difference. Obviously you will have to have a right sized shell to start with...

Get a sixpack and start drilling, mang.

The floggings will continue until morale improves.

If you are still in Jackson, you could try finding a second hand store that sells old ski boots. They might have older pair of Solly boots or maybe some other older boot that has a liner that isn't all that packed out. Or you could try visting a boot fitter and see if they have a liner that they took out of someones boot. If they are building custom liners for people then the stock liners are just going to get thown aside. Explain you problem and maybe they will sell you one for pretty cheap. Hope that helps.

what size boot are ya? I've got some pro model liners sz 27.5 in good shape that are yours for shipping+6er. I've also got two pairs of technica icons, sz 9-9.5 that I could help you up with.
That being said, I run thermoflex liners in my solly promodels and courses. these boots do really well with the aftermarket liners. More comfortable, warmer and lighter weight on the whole. Win win situation, for sure.

are you a 13 - 14 shoe? 31.5 boot is very large. (you live up to your name)

    1-2 cm shell fit?

I have some 30 X waves new of you need them

actually it's a 15 shoe. i'm kind of scared to buy a new boot stock; i bought my boots a long time ago, and i think my foot grew a tiny bit. the liner probably packed out some, so I think that's the only way my boots still fit.

i'm gonna stop by a bootfitter; i adjusted the buckle location but it's putting weird pressure on my leg right now and hurts. Sigh...i see my bank account being lighter in the new future...damn.

I have the same problem. Huge feet and chicken legs.

    What I've had done.

-Foam padding glued to the back of the liner to eat up volume. A bootfitter will have the right stuff.

-Booster straps as you've already mentioned.

-Eliminators. Again, the bootfitter will have it.

Over tightening the upper shell and moving buckle locations around doesn't really get you anything besides stiffer boots and weird pressure points.
