    Organize my iTunes

I'm finally totally fed up with the amalgam of genres and style labels assigned to my 15+ gigs of music.

How do you guys organize your tunes?
    It's idomatic, beatch.

OK- but say you've got 3 songs of this guy, 4 or 5 of that other guy, and you're wanting to listen to those guys plus some other similar stuff.

Do you go through and make a playlist artist by artist?

re-categorize your tunes as required and as new ones are added.
you can make any genre you want.

"world" is the most annoying, and I always re-label to "Hawaiiana" "French" "Brazillian" etc.

You can do the same for anything.
Its easiest to do it in batches (you could search for Zappa and then do "get info" and re-label all zappa music as genre "bizarre")

Otherwise, yeah, do playlists. But those get corrupted and lost sometimes. I think genre is attached to the music file.

playlists, dude. Are you a cubicle drone? spend your day making them. It doesn't require a lot of concentration.

I've always been a genre guy, though.

I just switched to iTunes with the purchase of an ipod, and it's WAY more playlist-centric than WMP.

I guess I'm really wondering how to categorize all this music.

I have Metallica, Led Zep, and Modest Mouse all in "Rock." I get lost.

I am, however, a cube monkey, so I have that going for me.

well, easy way to do playlist is just start by making a Best of playlist for Metalica, Zep, Mouse, Hendrix, Beatles, each, and then mix it up.

Actually, I'm with you, Corn. I recategorize everything in genre. I like to shuffle within a genre, so I went in and manually changed each entry to what I thought the genre should be. It's a big task, and you gotta stay on it with each upload/download.

Alert: I lost some stuff and had to do it all over again. My computer had the personalized genre reclassifying, the iPod didn't --- or was it vice-versa?

The Rock section is the most daunting. I don't think I've ever really tackled that one properly.

I think about 80% of my songs are categorized as "alternative & punk." I'm sort of an album oriented listener, though, so don't see much need for creating playlists.

if you hit browse, you can use control (windows) or cmd (apple) to select multiple entries. Want to listen to blues and jazz? hit them both. works for artists and albums, too.

im genre oriented as well and ended up getting a bit more specific with them, and then expanding upon that with playlists. i also started just putting stuff on my ipod that i know id like to listen to - i have 60 gigs or so total, and just move what i want to the ipod.
