I want to go swimming in the pond across the street from my apartment building, but there are dead fish, ducks, geese, seagulls and other fowl floating in it...
Should I test the water or just jump in?

You should drink the water first, before jumping in.Originally Posted by crashnburn'd

You should bottle the water and then sell it chinese character guy for a huge mark-up.
Go swimming, but shower afterwards.

What do you think you have an immune system for?
It’s for killing germs!
And it needs germs to practice on… - George Carlin
When we read popular health and fitness publications, we get all sorts of advice on how to improve our immunity. We learn that we should eat certain foods, drink certain drinks and practice certain stress-relieving disciplines. If we follow these practices, we'll increase our resistance to disease and live happily ever after.
One thing that we’re never told however, is to heed the advice of George Carlin. You probably never thought of Carlin as an immunologist, but as in so many things, George was ahead of his time. As comedy’s most diligent scholar, Carlin was a performer who did his homework. Never content to simply rant and rave, George found a way to rant and rave with knowledge and intelligence.
In his 1999 performance, You Are All Diseased, Carlin did a hysterical and visionary sketch called "Fear of Germs." He told the story of his childhood years in New Jersey and the wave of polio that threatened his community. His theory, subsequently validated by a growing body of medical research, was that the immune system is trainable by exposure to dirt and filth. His rant, unfortunately, is largely unprintable due to his generous use of the "Seven Naughty Words." Nevertheless, it is clear that Carlin understood the central problem of immunity and the immune system. For Dr. Carlin, immunity rested on two key concepts: defense and education.
